Erb Strikes in Overtime as Spartans Defeat No. 7 Washington University-St. Louis, 2-1

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior forward Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored the game-winner in the 92nd minute as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory versus University Athletic Association foe and No. 7 ranked Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at Francis Field.

The Spartans, who received votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll, improve to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the UAA, while Washington, ranked No. 7 in that same NSCAA national poll, dips to 13-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the UAA.

Also of note, the two goals scored during Sunday's match against the Bears give the Spartans 48 goals as a team in 17 matches, breaking the old team single-season mark of 46 established back in 2006.

The hosts got on the board early notching the lone goal of the opening stanza when Cody Costakis scored unassisted in the sixth minute on a free kick from just over 18 yards out.

The Bears were able to maintain that 1-0 advantage through the halftime break, but the Spartans turned up the pressure in the second half. After the Bears' starting goalkeeper left the match, the persistence paid off for Case when senior midfielder Kyle Alsup (Avon, Ohio/Detroit Country Day, Mich.) laced a shot from just over 20 yards out that got past Wash. U. backup keeper Michael McCarthy in the 65th minute for his second goal of the season.

With the score knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the visitors wasted little time attempting three-consecutive shots during a three-second span with Erb's shot finding the back of the net. Freshman Patrick O'Day (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) attempted the second shot of the sequence and was credited with his eighth assist of the season.

In goal, senior keeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) recorded three saves in the win. For Washington University-St. Louis, Jonathon Jebson logged the first 57:29 of action with three saves before McCarthy was saddled with the loss recording two saves in 33:49.

For the match, the Spartans held a 17-11 advantage in shots and an 11-9 edge in corner kicks.

Case will conclude the regular-season portion of its schedule at home on Saturday, November 5, when it takes on UAA opponent the University of Rochester (N.Y.) (9-4-2 overall, 3-2-1 UAA) with kickoff at Case Field set for 5:00 p.m.
