Bourque Accounts for Both Goals as No. 22 Spartans Blank UAA Foe Carnegie Mellon, 2-0

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) recorded a pair of goals leading the No. 22 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team past University Athletic Association opponent Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.), 2-0, on a rain-soaked and windy Sunday afternoon at Case Field.

With the win, the Spartans, also ranked third in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes (NSCAA) regional poll, improve to 10-2-2 overall and have eight shutouts in 14 contests this fall. Case returns to action this Friday, Oct. 21, when it hits the road to take on Hiram College at 7:30 p.m. in their final non-conference match of the regular season.

With its loss, Carnegie Mellon, ranked sixth in that same NSCAA Great Lakes regional poll, falls to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the UAA.

In the seventh minute, Bourque broke the scoreless tie with her third goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Devyn Lee (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College). Lee collected the ball around midfield and sent a pass to Bourque who was running down the right sideline. Bourque made a quick cut toward the middle of the field and laced a left-footed shot from 25 yards away that skidded off the wet turf and slipped past Tartan goalkeeper Anna Albi.

The score remained that way until just over 10 minutes following the halftime intermission when Bourque added an insurance goal for the Spartans in the 56th minute. Junior midfielder Deena Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) raced down the left side of the field with possession of the ball, eventually sending a cross into the middle of the pitch where Bourque was charging toward the Tartan goalmouth. Bourque calmly lofted Levey's pass over Albi's head for her second tally of the match and fourth of the season.

In goal, senior captain Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) recorded six saves to post her eighth shutout of the season and 18th of her career. Albi made three stops in the loss for the Tartans.

For the game, Carnegie Mellon outshot the Spartans, 16-7, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
