Spartan Men Host CMU for Seniors' Day; Watch It Live

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team wraps up a home University Athletic Association weekend versus Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 16 at Case Field. Prior to the match, Case Western Reserve will honor its six men's soccer student-athletes who will conclude their careers as Spartans this fall.

The Spartans, ranked fifth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes regional poll, entered Friday's match versus Emory University sporting a 9-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the UAA. Prior to that match, Case last competed on Sunday, October 9 against Brandeis University in its UAA home-opener. Vinny Bell scored a pair of goals for the Spartans, the first of which set a school career record. Bell's UAA-best 14 goals this season give him 37 in four seasons -- surpassing the mark of 35 set by current Spartan assistant coach Kevin Bigart (2005-08).The record-breaking goal came at the 40:56 mark when he fired a shot into the net from 18 yards out. Bell struck again in the 83rd minute on a tapper from six yards out following a nice double-touch by senior midfielder Mark Ilhan and freshman forward Patrick O'Day.

For the season, Bell leads the Spartans and ranks in the top five in NCAA Division III in both points per game (2.83) and total goals, while O'Day ranks second behind  Bell in the UAA with 19 points (eight goals, three assists).

In goal, senior Ben Yabrow has logged more than 1,000 minutes and posted a 9-3 record, 36 saves and a 0.81 goals against average with three shutouts. Ryan Koepka has also logged over 102 minutes for the Spartans.

The Tartans entered Friday's action at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) with a 5-4-1 overall record and 1-1 mark in the UAA.

Prior to that match, the Tartans were led by Max Tassano with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Carmen Minella entered with 11 points on five goals and one assist. The duo of Chris Wysocki (four goals, including one penalty kick) and Alex Abedian (two goals, three assists) along with Mike Ferraco (three goals) and Scott Gerfen (one goal, team-best four assists) have also led the CMU offensive attack.

Between the pipes, Zach Stahl will likely get the start having played nearly 843 minutes in 10 starts with 25 saves, a .595 save percentage, 1.82 goals against average and a 4-4-1 record. Christopher Madden and Jacob Rice, who recorded the team's other victory, have also logged minutes in goal and could see playing time for the Tartans.

As a team, Carnegie Mellon possessed a decided advantage in shots entering Friday's match, 179-109, and in corner kicks, 79-48.

#10 KYLE ALSUP
Kyle is a native of Avon, Ohio, and a product of Detroit Country Day High School in Michigan. Prior to Friday's match versus Emory University (Ga.), he had played in 62 matches for his career with four goals and four assists. A UAA All-Academic selection as a chemical engineering major, Kyle is the son of Joel Alsup and Deborah O'Keefe.

#5 NATHAN BEALS
Nathan is a native of Streetsboro, Ohio, and a product of Kent Theodore Roosevelt High School. He is a member of the executive board for the Case Relay for Life. A chemistry and psychology double-major, Nathan is the son of Rodney and Alice Beals.

#9 VINNY BELL
Vinny is a native of Parma Heights, Ohio, and a product of Valley Forge High School. A 2010 NSCAA All-American and the reigning UAA MVP, Vinny recently became the top goal-scorer in school history. This fall, he established school records for most goals in a season and most career goals with 14 and 37, respectively. He also entered Friday's match just five points away from the school record in total points. Vinny ranks at the top of the UAA in goals and total points and in the top-five nationally in goals and points per game.  He is a two-time All-Ohio honoree, a two-time All-UAA performer, an academic All-Ohio selection and a UAA All-Academic selection as an accounting major. Vinny is the son of Leonard and Mary Bell.

#17 MARK ILHAN
Mark is a native of Westlake, Ohio, and a product of Lutheran West High School. He has played in 60 matches in his career with 10 total points and two game-winning goals. A business management and marketing major, Mark is the son of Ali and June Ilhan.

#3 NIRO WIMALASENA
Niro is a native of Mason, Ohio, and a product of Mason High School. A four-year starter, Niro entered action this weekend tied for third in career starts -- just five shy of the school record. Niro is a three-time All-UAA selection,  a two-time academic All-Ohio selection, an All-Ohio and All-Great Lakes Region performer, and a two-time UAA All-Academic pick as a chemical engineering major. Also a first-team Capital One Academic All-District selection in 2010, Niro is the son of Rohan and Naomi Wimalasena.

#1 BEN YABROW
Ben is a native of Marietta, Georgia, and a product of George Walton Comprehensive. A three-year starter at goalkeeper, Ben has logged more than 4,800 minutes in net for the Spartans and ranks in the top-five in school history with 189 career saves. An All-UAA selection in 2010, Ben has the most wins of any goalie in CWRU history with 29. A psychology major, Ben is the son of Marty and Angie Yabrow.
