Spartans Drop Fourth Straight UAA Contest to Washington University (Mo), 80-65

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight University Athletic Association contest, 80-65, at Washington University (MO) on Sunday, January 30 at the WU Field House.

Sophomore forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) scored 18 to lead the Spartans and added seven rebounds as Case dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-4 in the UAA. Freshman guard Tim Chung (Cypress, CA/Los Alamitos) added 16 points to supplement the scoring on a sharp six-of-11 shooting performance. Junior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) had a game-high eight rebounds.

One minute into the game, the Spartans led 3-0 on a triple by Fowler and held on to the lead as late as 15:36, when Summers scored on a lay-up to give Case an 8-7 advantage.

The game stayed tight until the Bears took off on a 14-0 run over that spanned 4:30 to take a 17-point lead at 32-15. Case managed to cut it to 12 on a fast break lay-in by senior wing Reid Anderson (Avon Lake, OH/St. Edward) with 2:56 to play, but Washington walked into the locker room with a 42-29 lead.

Anderson hit a jumper 25 seconds into the second half to cut the lead to 11 before Washington systematically worked their lead to a game-high of 26 with 5:56 remaining in regulation.

Case rallied, however, and whittled the deficit down to 10 with a 20-4 run over the next 4:22 capped by a steal and fast break bucket by Fowler. Nevertheless, Case would get no closer as the Bears closed out the 80-65 win.

The Spartans will be back in action on Friday, February 4, hosting the University of Chicago (IL) as they kick off Throwback Weekend at Horsburgh Gymnasium at 8:00 p.m. Case also gets another shot at Wash. U on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2:00 p.m.

As part of Throwback Weekend festivities, the Spartans will wear uniforms to honor Western Reserve University and Case Institute in Technology, which merged in 1967 to become CWRU.
