Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior running back Billy Deitmen (Mentor, OH/Mentor) rushed for a career-high 164 yards and a touchdown as the Case Western Reserve University football team opened the 2010 season with a 30-13 victory versus local-rival John Carroll University on Saturday, September 4 at Case Field. The meeting was the first between the two schools since the 1988 season.
The Spartan win brought the all-time series with JCU to 9-8-1 in favor of the Blue Streaks. Case is back in action next Saturday, September 11 at the University of Rochester (NY) at Fauver Stadium in Rochester.
The Spartans got on the board with 3:43 remaining in the first quarter when Deitmen - pictured right - scored on an eight-yard run that capped a four-play, 41-yard drive. Senior Sam Coffey's (Middletown, OH/Lakota East) extra point made the score 7-0.
Case then forced the Blue Streaks to a quick three and out followed by a three-play, 64-yard drive ending in a 28-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Joey Baum (Dalton, OH/Walsh Jesuit) to senior wide receiver Shaun Nicely (Willoughby, OH/South). Coffey's PAT increased the lead to 14-0 with 2:07 left in the first quarter.
The Spartans padded the lead with a 30-yard field goal by Coffey at 11:14 of the second quarter to cap a 13-play, 59-yard drive that took 4:58 off of the clock.
JCU got on the board midway through the second when Teree Harris scored on a two-yard run to end a seven-play, 59-yard drive. The PAT from Bad Marchese brought the score to 17-7 with 7:52 left in the half.
At the break, Case totaled 241 yards of offense compared to 134 for the Blue Streaks.
The Spartans added to their advantage when Baum - pictured right - connected on a six-yard TD pass to junior tight end Bryce Coleman (Solon, OH/Solon) with 3:42 left in the third quarter. The Case drive covered 75 yards in eight plays and featured a 44-yard reception by senior wide out Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius Prep). JCU blocked the extra point to keep the score 23-7.
The Streaks threatened to cut into the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Case senior defensive back Zach Hass (Peru, IN/Peru) intercepted a Michael Locke pass at the Spartan 13 yard line with 10:47 left to play.
JCU forced a Case punt on the ensuing possession and proceeded to drive 66 yards on seven plays and scored when Locke scrambled 14 yards to pay dirt with 6:30 remaining. The Streaks attempted a two-point conversion but failed, leaving the score at 23-13.
Case scored the final points when sophomore running back Trevor LeBarge (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade College Prep) rushed in from three yards out with 2:34 left to play. Coffey's PAT capped an eight-play, 72-yard drive and made the final score, 30-13.
Offensively for Case, Baum completed 9-of-13 passes for 133 yards and 2 TDs. Homyk led all receivers with six receptions and 91 yards. Defensively, junior linebacker Jacob Adams (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) recorded a team-high 12 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
JCU was led on offense by Locke with 44 yards rushing and 111 passing. John Cooley led the Blue Streak defense with a game-high 15 tackles.
