Spartan Men Fall to Geneva in Sudeck Tournament Championship Game

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Despite a double-double from sophomore forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice), the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team lost 71-64 to visiting Geneva College (PA) in the championship game of the 2010 Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament on Thursday, December 30 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Spartans fall to 3-7 heading into their non-conference finale at Oberlin College at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 3. With its win, Geneva improved to 8-3.

Fowler led Case with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) totaled 13 points and eight boards en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Freshman point guard Mike Byrne (Newton, PA/Holy Ghost) chipped in with 10 points, four boards and four assists.

Geneva was led by tournament most valuable player Richard Colick with 18 points and five rebounds.

The Spartans only first-half lead came on the opening possession when Summers hit a jumper at 19:46. Geneva quickly gained the lead with a Dave Phillips three-pointer at 19:30 and held their advantage for the remainder of the half. The Golden Tornadoe lead grew to nine on two separate occasions, including 33-24, when DJ Damazo scored a layup with 1:22 left before half. The Spartans were able to end the period on an 8-0 run and pulled to within 33-32 when freshman guard Tim Chung (Cypress, CA/Los Alamitos) nailed a triple at the buzzer.

In the second half, Case tied the score at 50 when senior center Eric Duerr (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) hit two free throws at 8:18. Geneva answered with a 6-0 run ending in a Colick layup at 5:31, then built their advantage to seven, at 63-56, when Dave Phillips canned a three-pointer. The Spartans were unable to get their deficit below five the rest of the way, falling 71-64.

Following Sunday's game at Oberlin, the Spartans jump into University Athletic Association play at Carnegie Mellon University (PA) on Saturday, January 8.
