Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Junior forward Vinny Bell (Parma Heights, OH/Valley Forge) scored a career-high three goals, including the game-winner in the 87th minute, to lead the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory versus the University of Chicago (IL) on Sunday, October 17 at Case Field.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2 in the University Athletic Association. With their loss, the Maroons fall to 7-5-1 and 1-2-1 UAA.
The Spartans got on the board first in the 21st minute when Bell knocked in a header following an excellent pass on a free kick by sophomore back Sam Kuehnle (Toledo, OH/Ottawa Hills).
Case added to its lead in the 34th minute when Bell knocked in a second header via a cross from senior forward Mikey Schmid (Oberlin, OH/Oberlin).
Chicago cut into its deficit with a penalty kick in the 52nd minute and threatened to tie the score in the 54th minute, but Case junior goalkeeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, GA/George Walton Comprehensive) made a fine charging save to hold the lead.
However, the Maroons kept the pressure on and eventually tied the score in the 56thth minute with a goal from Danny Hahn.
The game looked to be heading to overtime, but the Spartans charged the net in the final minutes and Bell deflected a shot into the goal following a header from freshman Ryan Galik (Avon, OH/Avon). The score was Bell's team-best eighth of the season.
In goal, Yabrow made a season-high 11 saves for his sixth win of the season. Chicago's Chris Giusto recorded three saves for the Maroons.
Chicago outshot Case, 19-8, and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Case returns to action on Wednesday, October 20 at the College of Wooster at 3:30 p.m. The final Spartan home match of the regular season is set for Saturday, Oct. 23 versus Westminster College (PA) at 5:00 p.m.
