Spartans Score on First Five Possessions, Record First Shutout in 41-0 Win at Hiram

Box Score

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Case Western Reserve University football team scored touchdowns on its first five possessions en route to improving to 6-0 with a 41-0 victory at Hiram College on Saturday, October 16 at Charles A. Henry Field. The Spartans have now won 37 consecutive regular season games.

Case returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 23, versus the College of Wooster in the annual Baird Brothers Trophy game at 1:00 p.m. at Case Field in Cleveland.

Senior quarterback Joey Baum (Dalton, OH/Walsh Jesuit) completed 15-of-26 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman running back Kenny Riordan (Spring Grove, IL/Richmond-Burton) rushed for a game- and career-high 74 yards on just 10 carries with his first collegiate TD and junior QB Kyle Synder (Stow, OH/Walsh Jesuit) rushed for 71 yards on 17 carries with a score.

The Spartan defense totaled five sacks and recorded its first shutout since the end of the 2008 regular season. Defensive tackle Dale English (Middleburg Heights, OH/Holy Name) posted five tackles, a sack and his first career interception.

The Spartans took their first possession of the game 48 yards on nine plays and scored when Baum hooked up with senior wide receiver Brian Webster (Southfield, MI/Southfield) for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The point after by senior kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH/Lakota East) made the score 7-0 with 8:46 left in the first quarter.

The ensuing drive by Hiram ended quickly when English recorded his first career interception on a tipped pass to set the Spartans up at the Terrier 34 yard-line. The Spartans then reached the endzone five plays later when junior fullback Christian Anderson (Maumee, OH/Marion Pleasant) rushed in from two yards out for his first collegiate score. Coffey's PAT made the score 14-0 at the 5:23 mark.

A three-and-out on the next Hiram possession gave the Spartans solid field position again and the offense capitalized with a nine-play, 59-yard drive ending in a Baum to senior wide receiver Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) eight-yard TD pass with 1:24 remaining in the quarter.

The next Spartan drive followed suit and ended in a five-yard TD run by Snyder with 10:21 left in the first half. Snyder's first career score capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive that coupled with another Coffey PAT made the score 28-0.

Junior wide out Bryan Metelsitz (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) got in on the action on the following drive and scored a 17-yard TD on a pass from Baum to cap a 10-play, 57-yard drive at the 3:44 mark.

Case's next possession went deep into Hiram territory but a fumble at the six yard-line ended the Spartan scoring streak and left the score, 34-0, at the half. At the break, the Spartans led in time of possession 19:49 to 10:11 and outgained the Terriers, 303-79.

Neither side scored in the third quarter but Case added to its lead early in the fourth when Riordan scampered 60 yards for his first career TD with 13:33 remaining.

Following next Saturday's rivalry game with Wooster, the Spartans open University Athletic Association play on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the University of Chicago (IL) at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
