Eric SchmuhlEric Schmuhl completed his 13th season as the Head Track and Field Coach of Case Western Reserve University in 2024-25, after being named to the position prior to the start of the 2012-13 season.

During the past 13 seasons, CWRU has compiled 233 All-University Athletic Association individual honors (105 women's/128 men's), including 55 UAA Champions.

In 2025, Case Western Reserve won the UAA championship in the women's weight throw, hammer throw, and discus throw. The men's team finished fifth in the conference at both the indoor and outdoor championships, and the women's team placed fourth at both meets. 

During the 2023-24 season, the CWRU track and field program had two All-Americans, two UAA Champions, and the UAA Men's Outdoor Runner of the Year. After claiming her third consecutive conference championship in the javelin throw, senior Adrienne Wachtman earned First Team All-America honors by placing seventh at the 2024 NCAA Championships. Junior Lauren Roskuszka placed 15th to claim Second Team All-America honors. On the men's side, graduate student Juan Perez won the outdoor 100-meter dash, the first Spartan to win the event in over 30 years, en route to receiving conference outdoor runner of the year honors. Perez and junior distance runner Nate Gilbert were named CSC Academic All-Americans following the outdoor season.

The 2022-23 season was a historic one for Schmuhl and the track and field teams. Following the indoor season, the men's distance medley relay became the first relay in program history to earn All-America honors after placing seventh at the 2023 NCAA Championships. Senior Joe Jaster (3,000-meter run) and graduate student Juan Perez (60-meter dash) each won UAA titles at the indoor championships. In the outdoor season, the Spartans captured four individual UAA Championships, including two by senior Jack Begley (5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run) who was named the conference's runner of the year. Senior Logan Singer (1,500-meter run) and junior Adrienne Wachtman (javelin throw) won UAA Championships, with Wachtman defending her title in the event. Begley and Wachtman each placed 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in their events. The Spartans set 13 school records during the 2022-23 season.

In the 2021-22 season, Schmuhl led the Spartans to four combined All-UAA honors during the indoor season and six combined All-UAA honors during the outdoor season, including a conference title in the javelin throw for sophomore Adrienne Wachtman. During the outdoor season, junior Joe Jaster qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter run, while during the indoor season Jaster (3,000-meter run), junior Jack Begley (5,000-meter run), senior Logan Singer (mile run), and junior Cecelia Zielke (5,000-meter run) all qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships. 

During the 2019-20 season, the Spartans combined for four All-UAA honors during the indoor season, including junior Taylor Jackson claiming the conference title in the women's weight throw. Senior Dominic Oddo qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships as he earned entry to the field in the men's heptathlon, after setting a new school record score of 4,768 points in the event at the 2020 Polar Bear Final Qualifier Meet. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA made the decision to cancel all remaining winter and spring championships.

In 2018-19, Schmuhl led the Spartans to a combined 22 All-UAA honors and nine UAA titles during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Cassandra Laios won the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Hammer Throw Championship. She became the 15th NCAA Champion in the 48-year history of CWRU Spartans athletics, and the first since former Spartan men's tennis players Eric Klawitter and C.J. Krimbill claimed the 2014 NCAA Doubles Championship. In addition, Laios earned an All-American honor in the discus on the first day of the outdoor championships. During the indoor season, Laios earned her first career All-American honor as she placed fourth in the women's weight throw at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

During the 2017-18 season, the Spartans combined for seven All-UAA honors during the indoor season and 11 All-UAA honors during the outdoor season. Senior Danielle Kulpins qualified for the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In addition, the Spartans claimed two individual UAA titles at the indoor conference championships and one individual title at the outdoor championships.

In 2016-17, Schmuhl led the Spartans to a combined 10 All-UAA honors during the indoor season and 18 All-UAA honors during the outdoor season. Junior Cassandra Laios was named the UAA Most Outstanding Field Events Performer in both the indoor and outdoor season, while senior Nate Wahner was named the UAA Most Outstanding Running Events Performer and freshman Dominic Oddo earned the UAA Rookie of the Year honor during the outdoor season. In addition, Wahner qualified for the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. At the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Wahner again qualified in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, and also teamed with junior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Joseph Cabral and freshman Jonathan Haling in the 4x400-meter relay to qualify in the event.

Schmuhl’s first two seasons at the helm of Spartan track & field were highlighted by a combined 12 school record-breaking performances (six women’s/six men’s) and a pair of NCAA All-America finishes for thrower Harry Weintraub.

Prior to arriving at CWRU, Schmuhl spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Baldwin Wallace, where he was in charge of recruiting as well as coaching the jumpers and combined event athletes for the Yellow Jacket track & field program. He also served as the assistant coach for the BW cross country program and a co-advisor to Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In his four seasons, BW produced 45 NCAA qualifiers, 22 All-Americans and 23 school records. In both 2011 and 2012, the Yellow Jacket men and women finished runner-up during the Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, marking the highest co-ed finishes for the school since the mid-1990s.

In addition to his coaching duties, Schmuhl also had the distinction of serving as meet co-director as BW hosted two NCAA Championships in the same year with cross country in the fall of 2009 and outdoor track & field in the spring of 2010. During both events, Schmuhl additionally served as facilities coordinator.

Schmuhl, who earned an undergraduate degree at BW, returned to his alma mater as coach following a one-year stint as a graduate assistant at Muskingum University. In just one year in New Concord, he guided four OAC Champions, including one student-athlete that broke three school records and qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship. Prior to his time at Muskingum, Schmuhl served as an assistant for three years at his high school alma mater, Medina High School.

While at Medina, Schmuhl coached the Bees to three straight conference and district titles as well as a regional championship in 2006. During his time, Schmuhl helped lead his student-athletes to 13 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Championship meet appearances, nine school records, four Medina County records and eight All-Ohio honors.

As a collegiate student-athlete, Schmuhl was a seven-time All-OAC honoree with a 2004 conference title in the 400-meter hurdles and a pair of appearances at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in 2004 and 2005. He was also an Academic All-OAC selection.

Schmuhl has USATF Level II coaching certifications in jump events and combined events and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Baldwin Wallace in 2005 and a Master of Education from Muskingum in 2008.

Schmuhl and his wife, Heather, reside in the Westpark neighborhood of Cleveland with their daughters, Emma and Nora.
