Matt Howerton was named the Assistant Coach of the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team prior to the 2021-22 season.

Howerton has helped to guide the squad to 23 wins over his first two seasons with the team, including a 15-10 record in 2022-23, matching the third-highest win total in a season in program history. He has mentored his players to four All-UAA honors over the last two years, including an All-UAA First Team selection and a spot on the D3hoops.com All-Region Second Team for Isabella Mills in 2022-23. 

Howerton came to CWRU from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he had experience with both the men’s and women’s programs. He joined the men’s coaching staff as an assistant in 2017-18, before eventually serving as the Interim Head Coach of the women’s team in November of 2019.

Prior to his time at St. Mary’s, Howerton was an assistant coach for the men’s program at Marymount University from 2015-17. He also worked as a Player Development Specialist at the Impact Basketball Academy in Sarasota, Florida from 2014-15.

Howerton’s collegiate basketball experience began while he was still an undergraduate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he served as the Head Manager of the men’s basketball team at the Division II school.

Howerton graduated from IUP in 2014 with a degree in Sports Administration and a minor in Business Administration.
