Todd Wojtkowski has built the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team into one of the top programs in all of Division III during his 17 seasons at the team's helm, which includes guiding the squad to the NCAA Division III Championship in 2023, the first-ever team title won by a CWRU team in any sport.
The National Championship came on the heels of back-to-back finishes at the NCAA Championship each of the previous two years, including in 2021 when he was named the Wilson/ ITA National Coach of the Year. Wojtkowski went on to lead the Spartans back to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive season in 2024, and then helped the team reach the National Championship match again in 2025.
In his 17 seasons at CWRU, Wojtkowski has compiled a 334-125 record in dual matches for a .728 overall winning percentage, while going 29-16 (.644 winning percentage) in University Athletic Association play with league titles in 2023 and 2025, marking success in the premier Division III tennis conferences in the country. Under Wojtkowski's leadership, the Spartans have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships eight times (2013, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025). He has coached his players to 28 All-America honors, including three NCAA Division III Doubles Championships and two ITA Cup D3 Doubles titles while mentoring his athletes to 13 CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors, two NCAA postgraduate scholarships, and five NCAA Elite 90 honors.
The last five years have marked the most successful run in the history of CWRU athletics. In addition to five straight NCAA quarterfinal appearances, including the four top-two finishes, the Spartans won back-to-back ITA Indoor National Championships (2022 and 2023) and claimed their first-ever UAA Championships. The 2023 Spartans set a program record with 33 wins, and James Hopper and Vishwa Aduru claimed the NCAA Doubles Championship. In addition to Hopper and Aduru, seniors Christian Provenzano and Diego Maza earned All-America honors after reaching the semifinals of the doubles draw at the NCAA Championships.
The 2022 team placed second at the NCAA Division III Championships and set a program record with 25 wins during the season. Individually, James Hopper and Jonathan Powell claimed the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship, and four players - Hopper, Powell, Vishwa Aduru, and Ansh Shah - secured All-America acclaim. CWRU also won the ITA Indoor National Championship in February, the first title in the program's history.
The 2022 campaign followed a successful 2021 season, during which the squad reached the NCAA Division III Championship match. During the shortened campaign, the Spartans went 14-3, including a 12-1 mark against Division III opponents. Wojtkowski's squad notched a 6-1 record against ranked Division III opponents during the campaign.
Wojtkowski picked up the 200th win of his career during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, with a 7-2 win against Occidental College on March 8. He led the team to an 18-1 record during the campaign, falling just four wins short of the program record with nine matches remaining on the schedule when competition was stopped. The Spartans' only team loss during the year came to second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and the squad was ranked ninth in the final ITA poll, as Wojtkowski brought home USTA Midwest Division College Coach of the Year honors. He also helped develop ITA National Rookie of the Year James Hopper and All-American Matthew Chen during the season, as the duo claimed the 2019 Fall ITA Cup D3 Doubles crown.
Wojtkowski coached Matthew Chen to an NCAA Division III Singles Tournament berth in 2019 while leading the team to a 21-9 overall record and a final ITA ranking of 12th in Division III. The Spartans also received both the ITA All-Academic Team Award and the ITA Regional Community Service Award during the year.
During the 2016 season, the Spartans tied a program record for wins in a season with a 22-8 overall record and reached a program-high fifth in the ITA National Rankings on March 17th. In addition, CWRU hosted and finished third at the ITA Indoor Championships, while seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke reached the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships for the second straight year, with both earning All-America honors. Krimbill was also named to the Academic All-America First Team and received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The Spartans would again match the program's win record the following season, going 22-6 in 2017.
In 2014, Wojtkowski coached Eric Klawitter and CJ Krimbill to the 2014 NCAA Doubles Championship. The national title, a program first, came just days after the Spartans became the first team in school history to play in the NCAA Elite 8. Academically, Krimbill was named just the third Capital One Academic All-American® in team history, and Derek Reinbold became the first CWRU student-athlete to win a prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award. Collectively, the Spartans earned an ITA All-Academic Team award.
In 2012-13, Wojtkowski was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year as the Spartans reached the NCAA Sweet 16. Along with earning the first team berth to the NCAA Tournament in program history, the Spartans (22-7) shattered the school record for wins and reached as high as No. 7 in the ITA national poll. Then a freshman, Krimbill became the school’s first ITA All-American as well as Central Region Rookie of the Year. He was also the second CWRU player in as many years to be tabbed UAA Rookie of the Year as a program-record six Spartans landed on the All-Association Team.
Wojtkowski was named to his post on August 25, 2008, as only the second dual head tennis coach in school history. He guided the Spartan women in addition to the men for his first five years. Both teams Wojtkowski inherited that fall sat near the bottom of the UAA and were unranked in the ITA Central Region. However, he quickly established a new standard of play and turned the program into one of the best in the nation.
On the women’s side, Wojtkowski’s five seasons as head coach were highlighted by the first national ranking in program history, a team record for wins (18 in 2011-12), and the first NCAA qualifier in team history (freshman Sara Zargham in 2013).
Before coming to University Circle, Wojtkowski spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I The Citadel. During his time in Charleston, South Carolina, he helped the program to its first-ever national ranking and a 16-9 record in 2007-08 after winning just two matches the previous year.
The Youngstown, Ohio native and 2012 Ursuline High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductee spent three years playing at the University of Toledo before transferring to The Ohio State University. As a scholarship student-athlete at Toledo, Wojtkowski was a three-time Varsity T award winner, Team Leadership Award winner, and team captain.
He redshirted his senior (first) year at Ohio State, playing for the Buckeyes during his first year of graduate school. The team won a Big Ten Championship and rose to a No. 5 national ranking. Wojtkowski earned several awards, including the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Award, the 2006 Senior Leader Award, and the Men’s Varsity "O" Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Wojtkowski earned his bachelor's degree in middle childhood education in 2006 from Ohio State and completed a Master of Business Administration at The Citadel in 2008. He and his wife, Julie, and their sons, Owen and Luke, reside in Solon.
