Brian Murphy joined the Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball staff before the start of the 2022-23 season.

Murphy has helped the Spartans reach new heights in his two years on the staff, winning the University Athletic Association Championship and setting the program record for wins in a season in each season. He helped lead CWRU to the round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23 and the round of 16 in 2023-24, going 45-9 (.833) over the two seasons. CWRU was ranked as high as second in the D3hoops.com Top 25 in 2023-24, the highest national ranking in program history.

Murphy coached a pair of D3hoops.com All-Americans in Mitch Prendergast (2022-23) and Anthony Mazzeo (2023-24). Five players have earned All-UAA honors during his tenure with the Spartans, while five have secured D3hoops.com All-Region acclaim.

Murphy brought 15 years of college coaching experience to CWRU. As a player and coach, while learning from some of the best coaches in the country, he has participated in 22 NCAA Tournament games including four trips to the round of 16 and two to the quarterfinals. He most recently coached for four seasons under the all-time Division III wins leader Glenn Robinson (967 wins) at Franklin & Marshall. While at Franklin & Marshall, the team won the Centennial Conference Championship all four years and enjoyed two trips to the NCAA quarterfinals. His teams at Franklin and Marshall combined for an overall record of 97-21 (.822).

Before Franklin & Marshall, Murphy was a head coach at Morrisville State College for five seasons, where his teams ranked as high as second in the nation. At the NCAA Division I level, Murphy spent two years as an assistant coach at Loyola University in Baltimore under Scott Hicks and one year as an intern at West Virginia University under legendary coach Gale Catlett who won 565 Division I games before retiring.

Before West Virginia, Murphy was a graduate assistant coach at Bethany College where he was first connected with current CWRU Head Coach Todd McGuinness. That year, under the helm of Coach Rob Clune, with Murphy as an assistant and McGuinness as a player, the team won the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship for the first time since 1982.

Before Bethany College, Murphy was an assistant at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in California where he coached under Charles Katsiaficas, who also exceeded 500 wins for his career, and helped the team win the SCIAC Championship and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Murphy played at Hamilton College for his father (Tom Murphy, who also coached at Northeastern University) who has amassed over 1000 combined career wins and now enters his 63rd year coaching basketball. As a player at Hamilton, Brian’s teams went to the NCAA tournament all four years including two trips to the Sweet Sixteen in his junior and senior seasons.

Murphy received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Hamilton College in 1999 and completed his Master of Science in Athletic Coaching at West Virginia in 2002.
