Senior (2017): Named to the Mideast ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Third Team for the third-consecutive season… Selected to the All-University Athletic Association First Team, the third all-conference honor and first First-Team selection of his career… Matched Jamie Hora’s program record for career wins with a victory against John Carroll on April 26, the 24th of his career, claiming his second UAA Pitcher of the Week award of the season and third of his career… Appeared in 12 games and made 11 starts, leading the team in wins (6-3), complete games (three), innings pitched (80.0), and strikeouts (59), while recording a 3.15 earned run average and a .236 opponents’ batting average… Held opponents to a .191 batting average (36-for-173) with the bases empty… The team went 7-4 in his 11 starts during the year… Went 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA, two complete games, and 27 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched during UAA games… Threw 36.1-consecutive innings without allowing an earned run from March 24 through April 26, throwing three complete games, allowing just 20 hits, and striking out 29 batters… Started the streak with a complete-game, 12-strikeout shutout against Brandeis on April 2… Earned UAA Pitcher of the Week honors following the effort… Struck out 10 batters in 7.2 innings against NYU on April 8… Pitched back-to-back complete game wins against Washington (Mo.) and Chicago, allowing just six hits in each game… Received UAA Spring All-Academic Recognition… Finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in innings pitched (257.1) and games started (38), second in school history in shutouts (2) and strikeouts (187), fifth in earned run average (3.22) and opposing batting average (.245), seventh in appearances (47), and 11th in complete games (7).
Junior (2016): Named to the ABCA All-Mideast Region Third Team and the All-UAA Second Team… Served as a team co-captain and led all CWRU players with an 8-3 record during the year, making 15 total appearances and 10 starts… Recorded a 3.84 earned run average and struck out 45 batters in a team-high 75.0 innings of work, while holding opposing batters to a .273 average… Held right-handed hitters to a .258 (61-for-236) batting average… Recorded a complete game against Washington and Jefferson on April 14th… Also pitched a complete game during the team’s game at Progressive Field on April 27th, a 6-1 win over John Carroll… Struck out a season-high five batters on four separate occasions… Had six outings of at least six innings… Earned UAA All-Academic honors… Will enter his senior season with 18 career wins, the third-most in school history and six behind the program record.
Sophomore (2015): Named to the ABCA Mideast All-Region Third Team and the All-University Athletic Association Second Team…was 4-2 with a 2.60 ERA, holding opponents to a .257 batting average…struck out 36 batters and walked 27 over 55.1 innings pitched…had back-to-back scoreless outings with 6.2 shutouts innings against Allegheny on April 4 and 6.0 shutout innings against Pitt-Greensburg on April 10…allowed just one earned run in a complete game loss to Emory on March 14…struck out a season-high six batters on three separate occasions…earned UAA All-Academic recognition.
Freshman (2014): Pitched in 10 games with eight starts as team’s top freshman hurler…went 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 47 innings of work…ranked second on the team in strikeouts…threw nine shutout innings with nine strikeouts in an NCAA Mideast Regional elimination game versus LaRoche on May 17…named UAA Pitcher of the Week on May 20…struck out a season-high 10 batters in five scoreless innings in game two of a doubleheader versus Westminster on April 5…logged 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts in collegiate debut against John Carroll on February 21.
Personal: Earned two varsity letters in both baseball and basketball at Ross Senior High School…named first-team All-Southwest Ohio Conference in both sports as a senior…member of the National Honor Society…AP Scholar…Presidential Scholar Award recipient…son of Doug and Tracy Shields.
