The Case Western Reserve University softball team ended the regular season by sweeping a doubleheader with Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday afternoon at Gene Deal Field in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania, winning the first game 7-1 before coming behind to win the second contest 5-4.
The Spartans ended the regular season with a record of 27-12 and a 12-6 mark in University Athletic Association contests. CWRU placed third in the league. The Tartans finished the season at 20-18 and 6-12 in the UAA, ending the year sixth in the conference standings.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry collected a pair of hits and two RBI in the opening contest and drove in the game-tying run in the second game
- First-year catcher Sophia Becker drove in the go-ahead run with her eighth double of the year
- Junior infielder Karen Potts walked three times, doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run in the first game. She homered in the second contest and reached twice via bases on balls
- Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller had two hits, including a double, in the second game, and added a walk and two runs scored
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (9-3) earned the win in the first game, allowing one run on two hits and three walks in five innings. She struck out a pair of batters
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the first win, allowing a hit and a walk but recording two strikeouts. In the later contest, she did not allow a run in two-thirds of an inning of relief
- First-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland allowed four runs (three earned) in four and one-third innings, striking out two batters in the second game
- Sophomore pitcher Laura Meoli (2-1) worked around six hits to blank the Tartans over two innings of relief, earning the win in the second contest
Game 1 Summary: CWRU 7, Carnegie Mellon 1
- CWRU loaded the bases in the first inning but was unable to score
- With two outs in the next inning, Potts hit a double to left center field to drive in the first run of the game
- Mclelland drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning to add to the lead
- Sophomore infielder Kate Coonan drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, making the score 3-0
- Potts scored the fourth run of the game in the fourth inning on a throwing error
- The Tartans cut into the deficit with a triple in the bottom of the frame
- Case Western Reserve loaded the bases in the next inning, and Berry drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single
- Miller followed with a steal of home, making the score 7-1
- Neither team scored in the last two innings, finalizing the Spartan win
Game 2 Summary: CWRU 5, Carnegie Mellon 4
- Potts scored the opening run of the contest in the first inning on a wild pitch after working a leadoff walk, stealing second, and moving to third on a single by Miller
- Junior infielder Kaelyn Zusi followed with a run-scoring single to double the lead
- Carnegie Mellon responded in the bottom half of the frame, scoring on a CWRU error
- After three scoreless innings, CMU loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning
- After an out at the plate, the Tartans took a 4-2 lead with back-to-back singles
- Potts led off the seventh inning with a home run, her team-leading 12th of the season, making the score 4-3 in favor of the hosts
- Miller followed with a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch
- Berry brought her home with a single, tying the score at four
- The next batter, Becker, doubled down the left field line, plating the go-ahead run for Case Western Reserve
- With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Carnegie Mellon put the tying and winning runs aboard with back-to-back singles
- Runner's interference was the second out of the inning, keeping runners at first and second base
- A single potentially extended the game, but the CWRU defense caught the Tartan runner too far off second base, ending the contest
Spartan Notes
- CWRU moved to 19-3 all-time against Carnegie Mellon, including a 7-0 mark on the road in the series
- Entering play on Saturday, CWRU ranked 25th in the NCAA Power Index (NPI). The Spartans were seventh among teams who are not in position to earn their league's automatic bid. NPI is used to select the 22 at-large teams in the NCAA Tournament. Carnegie Mellon placed 104th in Division III in the latest rankings
- Potts's three walks in the first game are the most by a Spartan since Stevie Reiger drew three free passes on March 3, 2024, against Wartburg. She has scored 52 runs this season, including the four on Saturday, the fourth most in a single season in program history
- Miller had her 10th multi-hit game of the season in the nightcap
- Zusi, who reached base in both games, has appeared on base in 16 consecutive contests, the second-longest streak by a Spartan this season
- The Spartans improved to 20-2 when allowing four or fewer runs in 2026
