Senior Lily McCloskey of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team tied the program record for career doubles wins during the 15th-ranked team's 5-2 loss to sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday morning at the Eyre Courts in Newport News, Virginia.
The Spartans fell to 6-2 with the loss while the Blue Jays improved to 9-6.
McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang defeated Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin 7-6 (9-7) at first doubles to help CWRU win the doubles point in the match. It was McCloskey's 76th career doubles win, moving her into a tie with Nithya Kanagasegar for the most in program history.
After Case Western Reserve dropped the third doubles match, senior Anna Kan and junior Elsa Syed gave the Spartans the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Sydney Langer and Sahana Madala at second doubles.
Johns Hopkins won five of the six singles contests to win the overall match 5-2. McCloskey earned the team's lone win in singles play, besting Xiao, ranked 46th in Division III, 3-6, 7-6, 10-4. Wang also battled to three sets with Langer at second singles, but fell 6-0, 3-6, 4-6.
The Spartans will look to rebound when they return home for three matches next weekend. CWRU hosts 20th-ranked Kenyon on Friday, March 28 at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club, with action slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
