Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Maura Schorr led all Spartans with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but a second-half surge by Emory University pushed the Eagles past the Spartans on Sunday afternoon, 73-58 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The Spartans fell to 7-13 overall and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 13-7 with a 5-4 conference record.
Schorr made a career-high seven shots on 13 attempts in the game and added an assist, two steals, and a block. Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes added 11 points, six assists, and two steals, while junior guard/forward Emily Plachta added 10 points and three blocks.
The Spartans trailed for just 11 seconds in the opening quarter of the game and led by as many as five points in the period, going ahead 9-4 on a layup by Hartjes with 6:17 to play in the frame. CWRU led until the 1:40 mark when Emory tied the game at 11-11, but a layup by Hartjes to end the period gave the Spartans a 13-11 lead heading into the second period. CWRU scored the first five points of the second quarter, taking an 18-11 lead after a three by sophomore guard Jordyn Call a minute into the period, and built their lead to 11 points on a three by sophomore guard Olivia Franciscus with 3:08 to play in the half and took a 34-25 lead into the break after Schorr knocked down a buzzer-beating putback.
Schorr finished the first half with a team-leading 12 points, making six of her eight shot attempts over the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Spartans lead was at 10 points, 37-27, following a three by Plachta with 9:17 to play in the third, but Emory followed with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 41-39 lead with 4:29 left in the frame. The Eagles led by as many as six points in the third, but a layup by Hartjes as time ran out in the period cut the Emory lead to 49-45 heading into the final quarter. However, the Eagles scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to open up a 14-point lead with under five minutes left, putting the game out of reach for the Spartans. CWRU would not get closer than nine points the rest of the way, and Emory's lead grew to as many as 17 points in the closing minute of the contest.
The Spartans will play their final two home games of the season next weekend, hosting Washington University (Mo.) on Friday night and the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
Spartan Notes
-
Sunday's game marked the end of Throwback Weekend for the Spartans, who honored CWRU's rich history by wearing the traditional yellow uniforms of Mather College, one of the schools that federated to form Case Western Reserve University in 1970.
-
Schorr's double-double was her third of the season and her second in conference play.
-
CWRU led for the majority of the game on Sunday, holding the advantage for 21 minutes and 46 seconds compared to just 14 minutes and 33 seconds where Emory led.
-
Senior forward Evie Miller added a block on Sunday to give her 51 for the year, moving her into sole possession for the third-most in a single season in program history. She is five blocks away from Emily Mueller (2012-13) for the second-most blocks in a season by a Spartan and 16 short of Elaine Cotronakis' (1987-88) program record of 67. Her 118 career blocks are the fourth-most in team history.
-
Sunday's game was the Spartans' sixth-straight loss to Emory, as CWRU fell to 29-33 all-time against the Eagles.
