The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered a loss in its first University Athletic Association road game of the season, falling 104-64 to the 11th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday night.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-8 on the season and to 1-1 in UAA games, while the Bears improved to 11-2 overall and drew even with CWRU in the conference standings with a 1-1 league record.
Graduate student forward Andy Barba led all Spartan players with 16 points on six-of-14 shooting from the floor, including two-of-six from long range. Senior guard Sam Trunley added 14 points on a five-of-12 shooting effort, including two-of-six from behind the arc, and added three rebounds and a pair of assists. Graduate student guard Nicholas Schiavello finished the contest with nine points on a four-of-nine shooting performance.
CWRU led in the opening minutes when Schiavello made a layup to start the contest and Trunley added a three shortly thereafter to put the Spartans up 5-2 with 18:51 left. The game remained close early, but the Bears began to slowly pull away seven minutes into the game, turning a two-point lead with 10:40 left in the period to a 27-17 advantage by the 7:58 mark. WashU maintained a lead for the rest of the half and closed the frame on a 9-2 run to take a 46-28 lead into halftime.
The Spartans were able to get within 16 points early in the second half after a layup by junior forward Aaron Rucker cut the Bears' lead to 49-33 with 18:32 to play. However, WashU was able to extend its lead throughout the half, leading by as many as 43 points down the stretch en route to the win.
WashU's Drake Kindsvater led all scorers in the game with 17 points. Six different WashU players scored at least 10 points in the game.
CWRU will look to bounce back on Sunday when the team wraps up its road weekend at the University of Chicago. The Spartans and the Maroons are set to tip off at 3:00 p.m. ET at the Ratner Center in Chicago.
