Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 13 Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Third Round with 5-0 Win Over No. 14 Carleton

The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team advanced to the Third Round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-0 win over 14th-ranked Carleton College in the round of 32 at the Whitewater Outdoor Tennis Complex in Whitewater, Wisconsin, on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Spartans (15-6) will face third-ranked Chicago on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET. It will be the third meeting between the two schools this season after the Maroons won once in the regular season and once in the University Athletic Association semifinal.

CWRU, making its third-ever appearance in the team championship, will reach the third round for the second time in program history. The Spartans, who improved to 3-2 all-time in postseason play with Friday's win, fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the same round in 2022.

The Knights suffered their first loss of the 2023-24 campaign and ended their season with a record of 18-1.

Case Western Reserve swept the doubles matches to open a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The Spartans began the scoring at third doubles where senior Pallavi Goculdas and junior Anna Kan dispatched Kat Smiricinschi and Ryann Witter, 8-1. Sophomore Katalina Wang and junior Radha Patel followed with an 8-1 win over Mariam Nechiporuk and Ingrid Smith at second doubles. To complete the sweep, juniors Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey, the fourth-ranked doubles pair in Division III, beat Mary Hose and Amelia Asfaw 8-4 at first doubles.

Needing just two singles wins to advance in the tournament, the Spartans picked up their first point at second singles. McCloskey won 6-4, 6-3, over Hose to put Case Western Reserve a point away from clinching. With both the fifth and sixth singles matches one point from victory, sophomore Asha Shukla ended first on court six, winning the round for the Spartans with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over Witter.

When the match reached its conclusion, CWRU led on three of the four remaining courts with the other court tied. At fifth singles, Patel led 7-5, 5-2, over Kiley Pickens. The other three matches were in their third sets, with Kan ahead 6-4, 2-6, 2-1, at fourth singles, Wang leading 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, at third singles, and Kassaie tied 4-6, 6-2, 0-0, at first singles.
