The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated 25th-ranked North Central College 5-0 on Saturday at the College of DuPage Tennis Courts in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
The Spartans improved to 13-4 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 20-7.
CWRU started with a sweep of the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Juniors Hannah Kassaie and junior Lily McCloskey won 8-2 at first doubles over Natalie Bassett and Abigail Penados. Senior Pallavi Goculdas and junior Anna Kan followed with an 8-4 win at second doubles over Kate Herlihy and Kensington Payne. To complete the sweep, senior Katherine Wang and sophomore Katalina Wang defeated Kayla McSweeney and Mikayla Edquiban 8-4 at third doubles.
At sixth singles, senior Chloe Ku defeated McSweeney 6-1, 6-0, to put the Spartans one point away from clinching the match. Sophomore Elsa Syed provided the winning point, ending the match with a 6-2, 6-1, victory at fifth singles over Herlihy.
At the time of completion, Case Western Reserve led on three of the four remaining courts. Kassaie won the first set 6-3 over Penados at first singles and led 3-2 in the second set. After winning the first set 6-4, Katalina Wang trailed Bassett 1-3 in the second set at second singles. Kan led 6-2, 4-3 at third singles over Payne.
CWRU will next head to Altamonte Springs, Florida, for the University Athletic Association Championship Tournament held at Sanlando Park from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28. The tournament bracket is slated to be announced early next week.
