The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team won both of its games on Sunday, the first day of its trip to Florida for The Spring Games, defeating seventh-ranked Rowan 4-1 and the United States Coast Guard Academy 10-2 in six innings at Legends Way Field 3 in Clermont, Florida.
With the wins, the Spartans improved to 6-1 on the season. The Profs fell to 6-4, while the Bears dropped to 0-2.
#8 CWRU 4, #7 Rowan 1
Senior Kela Jagoda led off the game with a triple, her second of the season. Senior Stevie Rieger drove her in to put the Spartans on the board in the opening frame.
After junior Lexi Miskey worked around a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning, CWRU scored three in the second inning to open a 4-0 lead. With two outs and no one on, sophomore Elizabeth Berry singled to keep the inning alive. After first-year Nylah Durham was hit by a pitch, Jagoda walked to load the bases. First-year Karen Potts followed with a bases clearing double to left center field, pushing three runs across to increase the Spartan advantage.
The Profs put two runners on base in the second, fourth, and fifth innings but were unable to score. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Berry and junior Isabella Russo turned a double play to keep Rowan off the board.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Profs put runners on the corners on a pair of singles. A pinch-hit single cut into the deficit, but senior pitcher Jenna Jaklich escaped the threat with a strikeout.
Jaklich worked around a one-out hit in the final inning to complete the win. Miskey (3-1) threw five shutout innings in the circle, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Jaklich pitched the last two innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out one.
#8 CWRU 10, Coast Guard 2 (6 inn.)
Jagoda started the home half of the first inning with a walk, and, after stealing her first two bases of the game, scored on a wild pitch to give CWRU an early 1-0 lead. The senior finished the game with five steals, matching the program record set by Sarah Miller at Defiance on March 21, 2021. As a team, the Spartans swiped nine bags, tied for the fourth most in a single game since 2002.
After junior pitcher Kylie Hosey worked around two base runners in the next inning, Jagoda drove in the second run of the game with two outs in the second frame. Berry, who singled to start the inning, scored on Jagoda's two-out single.
Case Western Reserve opened a seven-run lead by scoring five times in the fourth inning. Berry drove in Russo, who tripled to begin the inning, to start the scoring. A pinch-hit double by first-year Alaina Steffes plated two more runs, and she crossed home plate on a single by Jagoda. After two more steals, she scored on a groundout by Rieger.
The Bears scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, cutting their deficit to five, but three Spartan runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the contest by run rule. Rieger and Potts each drove in runs with hits, while Jagoda scored on a wild pitch.
Hosey (3-0) earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore Devanghi Misra made her 2024 debut, allowing one run in the final inning.
The Spartans continue their spring break trip in Florida with a pair of games on Monday, facing Mount St. Joseph at 4:15 p.m. on Legends Way Field 4 and Ohio Northern under the lights at 6:15 p.m. on Legends Way Field 1.Â
