The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team ended its 2023-24 season on a high note with a 63-52 win over Carnegie Mellon University on 'Senior Day' on Saturday afternoon inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans ended the campaign with an 11-14 overall record with the win and finished in sole possession of sixth place in the University Athletic Association with a 4-10 league mark. The Tartans ended their season with an 11-14 overall record as well and went 3-11 in UAA games. Saturday's win also gave the Spartans a split of their season series with Carnegie Mellon.
Senior guard Sarah Mitchell continued her recent stretch of strong play, setting a career-high for the third-straight game with 27 points on a 11-of-17 shooting effort, including a career-high three three-pointers on six attempts. She also matched her career-high with 12 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season while adding on five steals and a block.
Senior forward Kayla Characklis added 15 points and eight rebounds in the game, as CWRU's graduating class accounted for 51 of the team's 63 points in the game. The Spartans finished the day shooting 39.7% overall (25-63) and 33.3% (8-24) from behind the three-point line.
The Spartans trailed through most of the first quarter but ended the period on a 7-0 run to take an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes. Mitchell finished the first period with 13 points to pace the Spartans. The Tartans tied the game at 18-18 with 8:12 left in the second, but CWRU answered with an 11-0 run, capped off by a three from Mitchell, going ahead 29-18 with 3:22 to play in the half. The Spartans went on to outscore Carnegie Mellon 26-9 in the second period, leading by as many as 22 points following a three-pointer by first-year guard Mya Hartjes with 16 second left in the frame, and took a 44-24 lead into halftime.
Mitchell made eight-of-nine shots from the floor in the first half for 20 points to lead all CWRU players.
The Spartans maintained at least a 15 point lead for the entirety of the third quarter and a layup by Characklis with five seconds left in the period gave CWRU a 56-35 advantage heading into the fourth. The Tartans were able to put a dent in the Spartans' lead in the fourth, pulling within nine points with just over a minute left, but CWRU held on for the double-digit win.
Before the start of Saturday's game, the Spartans also recognized the seven graduating players on the team who appeared in the final game of their collegiate career - senior forward Kennedy Boone-Sautter, Characklis, senior forward Preet Gill, graduate student forward Morgan Micallef, Mitchell, graduate student forward Kate Montgomery, and senior guard Margaret Terry.
