The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team got back to .500 for the season with a 102-76 win over Hiram College on Wednesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The win put an end to a four-game losing streak for the Spartans, who improved to 4-4 overall. The Terriers dropped to 3-5 following the setback.
Senior guard Sam Trunley led all Spartans in the game with 23 points, shooting eight-of-12 overall and four-of-six from behind the arc, while adding four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Graduate student forward Andy Barba finished the game with 19 points on an eight-of-14 shooting effort overall, including three-of-eight from long range, and senior forward Andrew Fox came off the bench to score 10 points with four rebounds, his best totals during his Spartan career.
The Spartans turned in their best shooting performance of the season on Wednesday, recording season-highs in both overall shooting percentage (57.7%) and three-point shooting percentage (44.8%). CWRU outrebounded Hiram 36-28 and matched its season-high with 19 assists as a team.
The teams combined to successfully make the first 14 shots of the game with a three by graduate student forward Andy Barba putting the Spartans in front 14-11 by the 15:53 mark. CWRU went on to make its first nine attempts from the floor, taking a 21-17 lead on another three by Barba with 14:17 left in the period and a 24-19 lead with 11:55 left following a three by sophomore guard Charlie Fox. However, the Spartans went cold from the floor and did not score again over the next four minutes and 19 seconds, allowing Hiram to go on a 9-0 run and take a 28-24 lead. CWRU regained the lead after threes on back-to-back possessions by sophomore guard Drey Fox gave the Spartans a 34-32 edge with 4:19 to go in the first and started an 11-0 run that put the team in front 39-32 with 3:40 on the clock, and CWRU closed out the period with a seven-point lead, 45-38.
CWRU shot 51.5% from the floor in the opening half with Barba leading the team with 12 points and Trunley adding 10 points.
CWRU continued to expand its lead throughout the second half, outscoring Hiram 57-38 during the frame behind a 63.2% shooting effort overall (24-38) and 42.9% (6-14) from long range. The Spartans made the first two baskets of the second half to take their first double-digit lead of the game and were up 10, 67-57, with 11:49 on the clock when a 12-2 run put CWRU ahead 82-61 with 8:41 to play. The Spartans led by as many as 26 points in the second half, including after a late steal and dunk in transition by first-year guard Matthew Ellis with 25 seconds left in the game that put the Spartans ahead by the final score, 102-76.
The Spartans will wrap up their three-game home stand on Saturday when the team hosts Denison University at 2:00 p.m. inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.

CWRU improved to 19-23 all-time against Hiram. This was the second-straight win and the second year in a row the Spartans have scored 100 points against Hiram after winning 104-95 in the first meeting between the two teams since 2012-13.
