Women’s Soccer Falls in Regular Season Finale to No. 7 CMU, 3-1

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team lost its regular season finale 3-1 to seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 8-4-5 on the season and finished the year with a 1-4-2 record in University Athletic Association play. The Tartans improved to 11-2-4 overall and 4-2-1 in the UAA. CWRU placed seventh in the association, while CMU tied for second in the conference.

The Tartans scored first in the sixth minute of play, converting a penalty kick to lead 1-0 early in the contest. The teams battled for the remainder of the first half, with CMU controlling possession early before the Spartans ended the half with momentum. Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the run of play, giving Carnegie Mellon one-goal advantage at the break.

In the 60th minute, the Spartans had an opportunity to score, putting two shots on goal that were saved by the Tartans within a 10 second period. CMU then doubled its lead in the 61st minute on a goal by Ayana Curto, her second of the season.

CWRU cut into its deficit in the 81st minute, looking to start a comeback in the final 10 minutes of play. A corner kick was sent into the box by junior Alexis Sassower. Junior Ceci Dapino controlled the ball and sent a short pass to junior Molly Shamah, who sent a strike into the top right corner of the goal. Shamah scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with the strike, while Dapino earned her second assist of the campaign.

The Tartans earned a second chance from the spot in the 87th minute. While the shot was denied by graduate student Maggie Storti, CMU recovered the rebound and put away the victory with the third goal of the game.

Dapino had a team-high five shots in the contest, while senior Katie Rishel put two on goal. Each team had 12 shots in the contest, with the Tartans holding a slim 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Storti finished the contest with four saves.
