The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to top-ranked Washington University in St. Louis at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans fell to 8-3-4 on the season and 1-3-1 in University Athletic Association play. The conference-leading Bears improved to 16-0-1 overall and 5-0-0 in UAA games.
The hosts scored three times in the first 23 minutes to earn an early advantage.
After halftime, junior Molly Shamah cut into the Spartan deficit with her sixth goal of the season in the 53rd minute. She fired a shot from well outside the box into the upper left corner of the goal to beat the WashU goalkeeper. It was just the fifth score conceded by the Bears all season and the first over their last 420 minutes of play.
CWRU held WashU scoreless for the remainder of the contest but could not find the back of the net again. A shot by first-year Taylor Brackett was blocked in the 66th minute and a shot from junior Mackenzie Mueller was saved with four minutes to play.
Shamah led the team with three shots and two shots on goal during her 70 minutes of action. Mueller and junior Maggie Farra each added shots on target for the Spartans.
Case Western Reserve will end the season with two home contests over the next two weeks, starting with a matchup against Brandeis on Sunday, November 3 at 11 a.m.
