The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team yielded a goal in each half on Saturday afternoon to fall to the University of Rochester 2-0 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The loss was the second straight for the Spartans, who dropped to 7-2-4 overall and to 0-2-1 in University Athletic Association play. The Yellowjackets, who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 poll, improved to 9-2-2 overall with a 2-1-0 conference record following the victory.
Rochester grabbed a lead late in the first half on a 33rd-minute goal from Natalie Santangelo, her sixth of the campaign. The score remained 1-0 through the rest of the half, as the Yellowjackets ended the frame with a 7-3 edge in total shots.
The Spartans found their footing in the second half, outshooting Rochester by a 13-2 margin during the frame. However, the Yellowjackets were able to add to their lead with a goal in the 53rd minute by Claire Grover, her fifth of the season, off an assist from Emma Cohen. Despite the opportunities, the Spartans could not find the back of the net in the contest.
Junior midfielders Ceci Dapino and Julia Flynn each finished with a team-high three shots with two of Flynn's landing on frame. As a team, CWRU finished the game with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
Graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti made two saves for the Spartans in the loss.
The Spartans will look to rebound during a challenging road trip next weekend as the squad will face Chicago on Friday at 4:00 p.m. ET and top-ranked WashU on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET.
