Case Western Reserve University senior Alex Fromberg, a quarterback on the football team, and senior Gabriella Chambers, a member of the women's swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Fromberg accounted for five touchdowns during the Spartans' 49-0 win over Saint Vincent College at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday night. Fromberg completed 22-of-28 pass attempts for 281 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while running for an additional 12 yards and a score. He completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Filips for his first score of the game to put CWRU in front 14-0 with 6:37 left in the first quarter and added a nine-yard pass to Noah Coyne with 14:51 left in the second to extend the lead to 21-0. Fromberg added a one-yard touchdown run and an eight-yard touchdown pass to Coyne in the second quarter, helping the Spartans take a 35-0 halftime lead, and then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Dahlem with 3:34 left in the third quarter to give CWRU a 42-0 advantage. Halfway through the team's regular season, Fromberg has completed 69.5% of his passes for 1,266 yards with 16 touchdowns and two interceptions while running for an additional 96 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. The Spartans improved to 5-0 with the win.
The Spartans will be back at DiSanto Field this weekend, hosting Thiel College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 in Cleveland.
Chambers helped the Spartans win seven events at the Early Season Invite hosted by Oberlin College at the Carr Pool in Oberlin, Ohio, on Sunday. Individually, Chambers placed first in the 50 Free (24.56 seconds), 100 Free (53.26 seconds), and 200 Free (1:57.62). She was also a member of the winning 200 (1:38.80)Â and 400 Free Relays (3:38.76) and 200 (1:50.78) and 400 Medley Relays (4:05.37). The CWRU women's team placed first out of four teams with 1,030 points at the season-opening invitational, winning 16 of the 19 events.Â
The Spartans continue their seasons on Saturday, October 19 with a dual meet at Division II Ashland University and a trip to Gambier, Ohio, for the Kenyon Relays. The dual begins at 11 a.m. and the relays start at 12 p.m.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mentions:
Junior linebacker Henry Busch (football) helped lead a shutout defensive effort for the Spartans during the team's 49-0 win over Saint Vincent College on Saturday. Busch led the team with six tackles (two solo), including 2.0 tackles for loss and one sack. His effort helped the Spartans hold the Bearcats to just 97 total yards, the fewest yards allowed by CWRU in a game over Head Coach Greg Debeljak's 21 years at the team's helm, and record its first shutout of the season. Busch has totaled 14 tackles (five solo) with 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks in 2024.Â
Senior outside hitter Rea Marfatia (volleyball) helped the Spartans split a pair of contests at the second University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by WashU in St. Louis on Sunday. Marfatia led the Spartans with 17 kills during the two matches, reaching the 1,000-kill milestone for her career with her final attack of the day. In the team's second match of the day, a five-set win over Brandeis, she had 13 kills to pace the team. Marfatia also was second on the team with 24 digs. This season, Marfatia leads the Spartans with 287.0 points (3.73 per set) and 247 kills (3.21 per set) to go along with 25 service aces and 220 digs. CWRU moved to 17-3 and 3-2 in conference matches after the split.
The Spartans will resume their non-conference schedule this weekend with a pair of matches at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. CWRU will face Muskingum at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 followed by a contest against the host Cardinals at 3 p.m.
Senior swimmer Peter Meng (men's swimming and diving) helped the Spartans win four events, set a pool record, and recorded an NCAA B cut time on Sunday. Meng swam a time of 3:58.14 in the 400 IM for the NCAA cut time which also broke a pool record set in 1999. Meng also won the 200 Back in a personal-best time of 1:56.80, the 500 Free in 4:41.24, and was a member of the winning 400 Free Relay (3:09.39). The CWRU men's team placed first out of four teams with 954.5 points at the season-opening invitational, winning 10 of the 19 events.
Junior middle blocker Amanda Ngo (volleyball) had a career day at the net for the Spartans during a pair of contests at the second University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by WashU in St. Louis on Sunday. Ngo had a career-high 11 total blocks in a five-set win over Brandeis, tied for the third-most by a single player in program history and the most since Tricia McCutchan had 11 against Rochester on November 7, 2009. She finished the day with 14 total blocks in eight sets, raising her season average to 0.94 per set. Offensively, Ngo was second on the team with 14 kills and had a .257 hitting percentage. This season, she leads the team with 66.0 total blocks and second on the team with 194 kills on a team-best .358 attacking percentage. CWRU moved to 17-3 and 3-2 in conference matches after the split.
Senior diver Abigail Wilkov (women's swimming and diving) swept the boards at the Early Season Invite hosted by Oberlin College at the Carr Pool in Oberlin, Ohio, on Sunday. Wilkov scored 266.60 to place first in the 1-meter dive and 245.35 to place first in the 3-meter dive.Â
