Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to Top-Ranked NYU 84-58

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team hung with New York University for most of the first half, but the top-ranked Violets ultimately proved to be too much for the Spartans, pulling away for an 84-58 win at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Friday night.

The loss was the second straight for the Spartans who fell to 7-6 overall with an 0-2 University Athletic Association record. NYU remained perfect on the year, improving to 13-0 with a 2-0 league mark.

First-year guard Jordyn Call came off the bench to lead all CWRU players with 11 points, shooting four-of-eight overall and three-of-seven from behind the three-point line. Senior forward Kayla Characklis was the only other Spartan to put up double-digit points, finishing the game with 10 points to go along with three assists and four rebounds.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-2 lead behind a three from first-year guard Mya Hartjes and a layup off a steal from senior guard Sarah Mitchell. NYU responded with a 5-0 run of its own to regain the lead, before a second three by Hartjes evened the score with seven minutes left in the first period. However, the Violets regained the lead on the next possession, and never trailed again in the game. CWRU remained close, trailing by just five at the end of the first quarter, 22-17, and were down by just four points, 29-25, after Hartjes converted a successful and-one with 5:40 left in the half. NYU was able to end the period on a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 42-29 by halftime.

The Spartans could not get closer than 14 points in the second half as the Violets pulled away over the final 20 minutes of action. NYU's 26-point lead to end the game was its largest of the evening.

The Spartans will aim to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Brandeis to Cleveland for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
