Kamiya’s Two Goals Power #22 Spartans to 4-1 Win over Allegheny

Case Western Reserve University first-year midfielder Ohta Kamiya scored the first two goals of his career, including the eventual game winner, to help lift the 22nd-ranked Spartans to a 4-1 win over Allegheny College at DiSanto Field on Saturday.

CWRU improved to 5-0-1 on the season with the win and extended its unbeaten streak to 11-straight matches (9-0-2) dating back to last season. The Gators fell to 1-4 with the loss.

The Spartans wasted little time getting on the board, striking for their first goal of the game in the third minute. Senior midfielder Matt Vatne passed a ball from near the endline to the edge of the six-yard box, where he found junior forward Brandon Kim, who was able to finish for the score. It was the first goal of the season for Kim and the team-leading third assist of the year for Vatne.

CWRU added to its lead in the 33rd minute when Kamiya came off the bench to score the first goal of his collegiate career, sending a corner kick to the face of the goal, which ricocheted off a defender and into the net for the unassisted score. However, just 28 seconds later, Allegheny struck for a goal of their own, and the score remained 2-1 through halftime.

The Spartans regained a two-goal lead early in the second half on Vatne's team-leading third goal of the season. Vatne took a pass from Kim inside the six-yard box and poked a soft shot past the keeper and toward the net. A last chance attempt by a Gators' defender to clear the ball sent it into the goal, extending the Spartans' lead to 3-1. Kim was credited with his second assist of the campaign on the goal.

With the goal and assist on Saturday, Vatne now has a team-leading 10 points this season. He also moved into a four-way tie for fifth in program history with 15 career assists.

Kamiya capped off the team's scoring with his second goal of the contest in the 82nd minute on a shot from about 13 yards out in the middle of the field. Junior forward Kysen Kroeger assisted on the score, his first of the season.

CWRU finished the game with 13 total shots, including seven on goal. Vatne, Kamiya, and junior midfielder Lucas Dalakis each registered a team-high two shots on Saturday.

The Spartans' defense allowed just five shots in the game with just a pair on goal. Sophomore keeper Bradley Winter needed to make just one save in the game to earn the win. He improved to 5-0-1 on the year with a goals against average of 0.34 and a save percentage of .882 for the campaign.

Saturday's win also extended the team's home unbeaten streak to 12-straight matches, during which the team has gone 11-0-1.

The Spartans will be back in action on Tuesday night, traveling to Alliance, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. start against the University of Mount Union.
