Case Western Reserve University sophomore Lauren Iagnemma became the school's first women's cross country runner to earn All-America honors since the 2010 season after placing 18th at the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pennsylvania.
The 18th-place finish was the third-highest ever by a CWRU women's cross country runner at the NCAA Championship, behind only Justine Jeroski's 11th-place finish in 2010 and Elaine Simpson's 14th-place finish in 2009. It is the ninth time in program history a Spartan has earned All-America honors for women's cross country, as Iagnemma joined former CWRU runners Jeroski (2008, 2009, and 2010), Simpson (2009), Britta Kumley (2008), Esther Erb (2006 and 2007), and Stephanie Nothelle (2006) on the team's list of All-Americans.
Running after earning an individual spot in the championship field following her runner-up finish at last week's regionals, Iagnemma crossed the finish line of the 6K race with a time of 21:25.6, the second fastest time of her career and a one-minute and 16.2-second improvement on her time on the course earlier in the season. A total of 292 runners completed the race on Saturday.
Iagnemma steadily improved her standing throughout the race, securing her All-America finish with a strong finish. After crossing the mile mark in 65th place with a split of 5:45.0, she went on to complete her second mile with 11:39.9 on the clock, moving into 34th place. She climbed another nine spots by the 5,000-meter marker, reaching the point with a time of 18:13.7, before passing seven more runners before the finish line to place 18th.
St. Benedict's Fiona Smith won the women's race with a time of 19:54.1. Carleton won the team championship with a score of 151.
Saturday's meet concludes the 2023 campaign for the CWRU cross country team. This was the 20th straight year that the CWRU cross country program has been represented by at least one men's or women's runner at the National Championship meet.
