Women's Cross Country Competes at Two Meets on Friday

The Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team was in action at a pair of meets on Friday, competing at the Spartan Invitational in the morning and the All-Ohio Championships at night.

CWRU opened the day at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan at the Forest Akers Golf Course, the site of the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship.

For the second-straight meet, first-year Ashley Novak was the top finisher for the Spartans, placing 62nd out of 217 runners in the women's 6K race. Running the distance for the first time in her collegiate career, Novak crossed the finish line in a time of 23:11.57. She was followed by senior Julia Kocherzat, who placed 105th overall with a time of 24:05.04, and then junior Sierra Williams in 111th place with a time of 24:12.94.

Junior Grace Jackson recorded a career-best 6K time of 24:25.37 to place 120th overall, and senior Catherine Phillips rounded out the Spartans' scorers in the race, finishing 126th with a mark of 24:35.94. Also in action at the Spartan Invitational were senior Melissa Phung (165th, 25:38.65), sophomore Mandy Lam (166th, 25:41.63), and sophomore Medha Patria (186th, 26:24.26).

The Spartan women posted a 14th-place finish out of 19 teams at the Spartan Invitational and were third out of the four Division III teams competition on Friday.

CWRU went on to finish third out of 15 Division III teams and 10th out of 33 teams overall at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio later in the day. The Spartans' top finisher in the women's 5K was first-year Lauren Iagnemma, who placed 49th out of 334 finishers and 11th out of 136 Division III runners with a time of 19:05.2. She was followed by first-year Julia Hluck in 70th-place (18th DIII) with a time of 19:29.7 and first-year Ayla Grabenbauer in 81st-place (21st DIII) with a time of 19:36.9. First-year Anna Avila (84th overall, 24th DIII, 19:36.9) and junior Jessica Kwasny (145th overall, 41st DIII, 20:37.9) rounded out the top five for CWRU in the race.

Also competing at the All-Ohio Championships for the Spartans was sophomore Marquis Globokar (159th overall, 46th DIII, 20:54.4), first-year Libby Mailloux (162nd overall, 48th DIII, 20:56.0), first-year Ariana Holbrook (171st overall, 55th DIII, 21:06.5), senior Danielle Sarno (186th overall, 59th DIII, 21:19.0) and sophomore Thrisha Bandepallee (196th overall, 65th DIII, 21:27.8).

Case Western Reserve will be off from competition next weekend, before returning to compete at the Mike Woods Invitational in Geneseo, New York on Saturday, October 1.
