The Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team, ranked 27th in Division III, turned in a sixth-place finish out of 32 teams at the Inter-Regional Rumble, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio on Saturday morning.
CWRU finished with a score of 202 for the meet, placing ahead of a pair of University Athletic Association rivals in Carnegie Mellon (7th, 219 points) and Rochester (8th, 275 points). John Carroll won the meet with a score of 70, followed by Wisconsin-Stevens Point (165), Centre (177), Trine (179), and Washington & Lee (187).
Seven of the 10 Spartans competing in the invitational race notched season-best times, including each of the Spartans' top-three runners. First-year Lauren Iagnemma led the team for the second-straight week, finishing 14th out of 282 runners in the 6K race with a season-best mark of 22:41.1. She was followed by first-year Ashley Novak in 23rd-place with a season-best mark of 23:02.4, and senior Julia Kocherzat in 47th-place with a season-best mark of 23:30.1. Completing the Spartans' scorers in the race were junior Grace Jackson, who finished 55th overall with a time of 23:34.9, and senior Catherine Phillips, who finished 66th in a time of 23:45.5.
Rounding out the top-seven finishers for CWRU were senior Melissa Phung (72nd, 23:54.4) and junior Sierra Williams (76th, 23:59.2). First-year Anna Avila (86th, 24:08.9), junior Jessica Kwasny (91st, 24:18.0), and first-year Julia Hluck (123rd, 24:51.8) each recorded season-best times for CWRU in the invitational race.
Baldwin Wallace's Hope Murphy won the race with a time of 21:45.5.
Sophomore Mandy Lam led a group of seven Spartans in the open women's 6K race on Saturday, placing 30th out of 134 runners with a time of 24:54.5. First-year Libby Mailloux placed 52nd and senior Danielle Sarno placed 53rd with times of 25:43.8 and 25:46.3, respectively.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward their championship season. CWRU will begin the final stage of its 2022 campaign at the University Athletic Association Championships, hosted by Emory University, on Saturday, October 29.
