Case Western Reserve University senior Jana Fisher led the 29th-ranked Spartans at the 2021 University Athletic Association Championships, placing third out of 71 finishers in the 6K race at the meet, hosted by the University of Rochester at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York on Saturday.
Fisher became the first CWRU women's runner to earn All-UAA First Team honors (awarded to the top-seven finishers) since former Spartan Kesley Aamoth in 2013, while her third-place finish was the highest by a Spartan woman since Elaine Simpson placed second in 2009. Fisher finished the race in a time of 22:44.4, just under 16 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
Senior Susanna Henry narrowly missed out on All-UAA honors, placing 17th overall with a time of 23:44.7. Senior Julia Kocherzat was the Spartans next finisher, crossing the line in a time of 24:07.2, followed by junior Catherine Phillips in 39th place with a time of 24:26.9 and sophomore Jessica Kwasny in 43rd place with a time of 24:45.4.
Completing the top-seven for the Spartans on Saturday were first-year Medha Patria (52nd, 25:09.8) and graduate student Grace Kemerer (25:29.7), while sophomore Grace Jackson (60th, 25:30.0), junior Melissa Phung (64th, 25:36.8) and graduate student Olivia Battistoni (68th, 26:19.8) also competed for the Spartans on Saturday.
The Spartans finished the UAA Championships with 121 points. Fifth-ranked WashU won the meet with a score of 32, followed by seventh-ranked Chicago (64), 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon (79) and 18th-ranked Emory (119). Following the Spartans in the standings were 24th-ranked Brandeis (122) and Rochester (163).
Chicago first-year Claudia Harnett won the individual conference championship in a time of 22:28.7.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward the 2021 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships in two weeks, on Saturday, November 13 in Shelbyville, Indiana.
