Martinez advanced to the final of the 133-pound bracket at the season-opening Mount Union Invitational at the Peterson Field House in Alliance, Ohio, on Saturday. He went 3-1 during the event with a pin, scoring 20.0 points for the Spartans. Martinez started the day with a pin in 4:24 over Zakariya Gurban of Randolph before securing a win by injury default in the quarterfinal in 5:50. He battled Carter Beck of Gannon in the semifinal, prevailing with a takedown in the first overtime period for a sudden victory win. In the final, Martinez faced James Armstrong Jr. of West Liberty University, last year's Division II Freshman of the Year. In a hard-fought battle, he lost by decision 4-3. With the three wins, Martinez moved into a tie for ninth in program history with 109 career victories. CWRU finished third out of 14 teams, and first among Division III schools, with 138.0 points.
