Close Pack, Led by Giannuzzi, Helps Spartans to Third at Allegheny Classic

The Spartans' top-five runners all finished within 33 seconds of each other, as the Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team finished third out of six teams at the Allegheny Classic in Meadville, Pennsylvania on Saturday morning.

Junior Cara Giannuzzi was the team's top finisher in the three-mile race, placing 23rd out of 83 finishers with a time of 20:06.  Sophomore Julia Kocherzat was the second Spartan to cross the line, coming in 26th overall with a time of 20:21.  Freshman Cassidy Hill followed in 28th place with a mark of 20:29, and junior Madison Vargo crossed the finish line five seconds later to place 30th overall.  Sophomore Maddy Nacci rounded out CWRU's top-five, finishing in 32nd with a mark of 20:39.

Completing the top-seven for the Spartans were senior Mallorie Mitchem (37th, 20:53) and sophomore Claire Keanna (42nd, 21:05), while freshman Catherine Phillips (55th, 21:37) and junior Elise Epstein (70th, 22:45) also competed on Saturday for CWRU.

The Spartans finished with a team score of 104, placing behind Carnegie Mellon (28 points) and Allegheny (35).

Case Western Reserve will be off next weekend, before returning to action at the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, September 28th at 2:00 p.m. in Cedarville, Ohio.
