2017 CWRU Women’s Cross Country Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University women's cross country team turned in another strong campaign during the 2017 season, behind significant contributions from both veterans and underclassmen alike.

The Spartans finished among the top-10 teams in all seven meets they competed in during the season, including an eighth place finish out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio on Saturday, November 11th.  Senior Danielle Kulpins was the team's top finisher at the regional meet, placing 17th out of 247 finishers with a time of 22:57.2 in the 6,000-meter race to earn all-region honors for the second-straight season.  Sophomore Madeline Lindemann missed all-region honors by just one spot, placing 36th in the race, with juniors Jennifer Hoffmann (44th place) and Isa Torres-Padin (63rd) and sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn (74th) rounding out the team's scoring finishers at the meet.  Case Western Reserve finished with a team score of 234 at the NCAA Regionals, as the team's eighth-place finish marked a three-spot climb in the team standings from last season.

Kulpins was the Spartans' top finishing runner in six of the team's seven varsity races during the year.  The one exception was the University Athletic Association Championships in Woodland Park, New Jersey, where Lindemann highlighted her breakout sophomore campaign with an 11th-place finish out of 76 runners to earn a spot on the all-conference second team.  It was the first All-UAA honor of her career, and she became the first Spartan sophomore or freshman to earn all-conference honors since Kelsey Aamoth did so as a sophomore in 2013.

During the course of the season, the Spartans climbed as high as 34th in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll, and to fourth in the regional rankings, following a second-place finish at the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, New York on October 14th.  At the meet, the Spartans placed all five of their scoring runners in the top-13, including three in the top-10, led by a fourth-place finish by Kulpins.

Case Western Reserve added a third-place finish among Division III teams and 14th overall at the 2017 All-Ohio Championships.  Kulpins again paced the squad with a sixth-place finish among the 148 Division III runners, while senior Rachel Laveson had her best meet of the season, finishing 15th among DIII competitors.  Other team finishes during the season including a sixth-place finish out of 16 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational on Saturday, September 9th and a second-place finish out of 11 teams at the Allegheny Classic on September 16th.

The Spartans opened their season by hosting and winning the Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede at the Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio on September 1st.  Kulpins finished second at the meet, while Lindemann (fourth) and Laveson (fifth) rounded out the top-five finishers at the meet.

In addition to the team's athletic achievements during the year, 14 members of the women's cross country team were among the 85 CWRU athletes receiving UAA Fall All-Academic recognition – junior Maria DeRenzo, Hoffmann, Kulpins, Laveson, sophomore Catherine Lawton, junior Amy Lin, Lindemann, sophomore Mallorie Mitchem, Pasadyn, senior Claire Plunkett, sophomore Gillian Prater-Lee, junior Ellen Sears, Torres-Padin and junior Sophie Trikeriotis.  Six team members – Hoffmann, Kulpins, Laveson, Lin, Plunkett and Trikeriotis – were among the 47 Spartans inducted into the Van Horn Society, which recognizes student-athletes at the University who have recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or higher and have an academic standing of juniors or seniors at the University.
