CWRU Cross Country Aims to Leave an Impression at NCAA Great Lakes Regional Champs

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's cross country teams will head to Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio on Saturday, November 11th for the 2017 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start, while the women's 6,000-meter race is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.  Fans can follow the action with live results at  More information on the meet is available at

There are 36 men's teams and 38 women's squads currently scheduled to compete for the regional title on Saturday, with each team able to enter up to seven runners each race.  The top-35 finishers in both the men's and women's race will earn All-Region honors.

Results from the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships are the main criteria in determining both individual and team participants for the NCAA Championships on November 18th in Elsa, Illinois.  The top-two finishing teams from both the men's and women's race will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, while 16 other teams will receive an at-large bid, with the regional finish serving as the primary criteria for selection.  The top-seven finishing individuals from each of the eight regions who do not qualify as part of a team will receive an individual selection to the NCAA Division III Championships, completing the field of 280 runners.  The final championship field will be posted to no later than 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12th.

Scheduled to make the trip to Powell for the Spartan men are seniors Aidan DeSanto, Sam Merriman, Zach Roshon and Ben Whitman, sophomores Tim Andrews, Andrew Green, David Hall, and Karthik Ravichandran and freshmen Dmytro Blundell and Yoshmar Pinal-Alfaro.  Traveling for the CWRU woman are seniors Danielle Kulpins, Rachel Laveson and Claire Plunkett, juniors Jennifer Hoffmann, Ellen Sears and Isa Torres-Padin, sophomores Madeline Lindemann and Vanessa Pasadyn and freshmen Olivia Battistoni and Cara Giannuzzi.

Last year, the men's team placed sixth out of 36 teams at the NCAA Regionals, led by a seventh-place finish from Merriman and a 26th-place finish by former Spartan Galen Caldwell, with each earning all-region honors.  DeSanto also competed at last year's meet for the CWRU men, finishing 51st overall.  The women were led by an all-region finish by Kulpins, who placed 20th overall to guide the team to an 11th-place finish out of 31 teams.  Hoffmann (62nd place), Pasadyn (68th place), Torres-Padin (84th place), Laveson (99th place) and Lindemann (115th place) all competed at last year's regional championship meet for the Spartans as well.

This will also be the Spartans' second competition of the season at the Liberty Park course, after the men finished fourth out of 18 teams and the women third sixth out of 16 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational on September 9th.

Full results and a recap of the Spartans' performances at the meet will be posted to following the completion of competition on Saturday.
