Spartans on to Fifth-Place Match after Day One Split at UAA Championship Tournament

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches to open the 2019 University Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Friday at the Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago, Illinois. The sixth-seeded Spartans fell to third-seeded Washington (Mo.) University in three, but bounced back to win 3-0 against Brandeis University.

CWRU (12-16) concludes the season in the conference's fifth-place match tomorrow morning versus New York University at 11:00 a.m. ET.

Versus WashU (23-7), the Spartans fell by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.

Statistically, senior middle hitter Haley Sims posted a team-best seven kills. First-year setter Sara Rogers led in assists with 16. Junior libero Jana Giaquinto led the Spartans with 17 digs, while Rogers added eight to the team total.

The Bears were led by Leila King with 15 kills, while Michaela Bach added eight kills and 10 digs.

Against Brandeis (4-22), the Spartans were victorious by counts of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-20.

Sims led the attack with 10 kills, while junior middle blocker Kate Kaminski added eight. Rogers and senior Faith Ellis split the setting duties as they recorded 20 and 12 assists, respectively. The Spartan back row was paced by Giaquinto with 10 digs, while senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon added nine to the total.

Brandeis was led by Emma Bartlett with 11 kills and six digs.
