The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split two matches on Saturday, defeating DePauw University in five sets but losing to Ohio Wesleyan University in five sets at the Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio.
Following Saturday's action, CWRU stands at 9-15 on the season, DePauw fell to 14-11, and OWU improved to 11-13.
In their first match of the day, the Spartans defeated the Tigers in five sets 26-24, 16-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-6. After DePauw forced a fifth set, the Spartans scored six straight points to start the final frame and never looked back, cruising to victory.
Senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon led the Spartan attack with a season-high 21 kills and 24 digs. Senior middle hitter Haley Sims added 14 kills and first-year outside hitter Gianna Lambert reached double digits with 10 kills. Leading the team with 32 assists was senior setter Faith Ellis, who also added 17 digs. Five Spartans had more than 10 digs in the match with the team recording a season-high 134. Junior defensive specialist Jana Giaquinto led the way with 33 digs, junior middle hitter Katie Kaminski added 22 digs, and junior setter Jordyn Harberts had 20.
The Spartans fell to the Battling Bishops in five sets, 20-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-21, 12-15. CWRU battled to tie the fifth set at 12, but OWU scored the next three points to take the match.
Lemon led the team with 17 kills, and Sims added 13 kills. Ellis and first-year setter Sara Rogers split the setting duties, with Ellis contributing 25 assists and Rogers adding 21. Giaquinto had a team-high 31 digs and Kaminski had 19.
Case Western Reserve ends the regular season with its Senior Day on Saturday, November 2 at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The Spartans will take on the College of Wooster at 11 a.m. and Buffalo State College at 3 p.m. as the team honors its five senior members.
