The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20) to Heidelberg University on Thursday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-13 overall, while Heidelberg improved to 19-3 on the season.
Senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon paced the squad with 13 kills, while senior outside hitter Karley King chipped in 11 to the attack. Senior setter Faith Ellis set up the offense with 23 assists, while freshman setter Sara Rogers added eight.
The Spartans led early in the first match after they jumped out to a 13-7 lead after a kill from freshman outside hitter Gianna Lambert. The Student Princes fought back to cut the deficit to 18-17, but CWRU would close out the set on a 7-4 run that was capped off by a kill by King to secure the 25-21 victory.
The second set saw the Spartans once again take a 12-7 lead after a kill by Lemon. CWRU increased that advantage to 17-10, but Heidelberg would go on a 15-4 run to earn the 25-21 victory.
After some back and forth play in the third set that led to a 10-10 tie, the Student Princes jumped out on a 9-3 run to take the 19-13 lead. The Spartans cut the deficit to 22-19 after a service ace from Ellis, but Heidelberg would claim the final three points of the set for a 25-19 win. The Student Princes jumped out to an 11-6 lead to begin the fourth set, but CWRU would go on a 12-9 run to cut the deficit to 20-18. However, another strong finish by Heidelberg allowed the Student Princes to clinch the match with a 25-20 win in the final set.
Heidelberg's Amy Feczer finished with a match-best 15 kills, while Taylor Valentine added 10 kills and 15 digs on Thursday for the Student Princes.
Case Western Reserve is back in action next week, as they travel to Hiram, Ohio to face the Hiram College Terries in a non-conference mid-week match on Wednesday, September 16th. Game time is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
