Senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon and senior middle hitter Haley Sims racked up 16 and 15 kills, respectively, to lead the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans are 5-11 on the season, while Oberlin drops to 7-8 on the campaign.
Freshman Sara Rogers and senior Faith Ellis split the setting duties, tallying 23 and 13 assists, respectively. Junior defensive specialist Jana Giaquinto led the Spartans with 11 digs, while Lemon, Rogers and junior middle hitter Katie Kaminski each added 10 digs.
CWRU jumped out to an early lead in the first set as they went up 16-11 after a kill from Lemon. The Yeowomen then went on a run to cut the Spartan lead to 22-20, but CWRU would go on to score three of the next five points, including a kill by Lemon to secure the 25-22 victory.
The Spartans lost the second set 25-19, but hit the ignition in the third. CWRU was down 8-5 early, but then came back and went on a 17-4 run to take 22-12 lead after a service ace from Rogers. The Spartans would close out the set with a 25-13 victory.
In the fourth set, the Spartans and Yeowomen went back and forth early as Rogers notched a kill to even the score at 10-10. Oberlin then went on a 7-3 run to take the 17-13 lead, but CWRU answered right back as they rattled off five straight points to take an 18-17 lead. The two teams would continue to go back and forth until the Yeowomen made two attack errors that allowed the Spartans to clinch the match with a 25-23 win.
Oberlin was led by Maura Gibbs with 19 kills and 12 digs.
The Spartans will now turn their attention to the second University Athletic Association round robin of the season, as the team will head to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, October 6th. CWRU will open the second round robin against Brandeis University at 10:00 a.m. and then face Carnegie Mellon University at 12:00 p.m.
