Volleyball to Host CWRU Invitational this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team will serve as the host of the 2019 CWRU Invitational this weekend. The Spartans play John Carroll University on Friday, September 6th at 5:30 PM. CWRU then plays two matches on Saturday, September 7th. The first match is against Muskingum University at 10:00 AM and the second match is against SUNY Geneseo at 2:00 PM.

CWRU Spartans (2-1)

The Spartans claimed wins in two of the three matches played this past weekend at the Spartans Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. CWRU earned a 3-0 win against Denison University in the early match on Saturday, and then claimed 3-0 victory over Bethany College in the late affair. Senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon led the team with 31 kills (3.44 per set) during the three matches, while senior outside hitter Karley King totaled 21 kills (2.33 per set).

During the team's match against Denison on Saturday, junior middle hitter Katie Kaminski tallied a season-high eight kills on a .615 hitting percentage, while senior setter Faith Ellis totaled a season-high 20 assists.

John Carroll Blue Streaks (3-1)

The Blue Streaks have opened the 2019 campaign with a 3-1 record and will face the College of Wooster on Wednesday before facing the Spartans on Friday. Sarah Calabrese currently leads JCU with 52 kills (3.25 per set) and Aly Bartolone has set up the Blue Streaks offense with 95 assists (5.94 per set). Defensively, Ana Coughlin has recorded a team-high 74 digs (4.62 per set).

John Carroll has averaged 12.44 kills per set, 11.56 assists per set and 0.81 blocks per set.

Muskingum Fighting Muskies (4-0)

Muskingum will enter the tournament on Friday following a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Mount Union Invite. The Fighting Muskies have averaged 12.82 kills per set, 11.64 assists per set and 1.14 blocks per set this season. Brooke Fatheree leads the team with 25 kills, while Brynn Guist is close behind with 23. Erin Dickson sets up the offense as she has tallied 78 assists for the season. Defensively, Fatheree has totaled 42 digs, while Jessica Cotte has contributed 38 to the team total.

The Fighting Muskies will face Washington and Jefferson College on Friday, before facing the Spartans on Saturday.

Geneseo Knights (0-3)

The Knights will enter the tournament following a 0-3 weekend at the F&M Scramble in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Geneseo is led by Grace Cergol with 37 kills and 23 digs. For the season, the Knights have averaged 10.17 kills per set, 10.00 assists per set and 1.92 blocks per set.

Geneseo will face Thiel College on Friday night, and then take on Washington & Jefferson before closing out the tournament against the Spartans.
