Volleyball Falls to Kenyon in Season Opener

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team came up short in its season-opening match at the Spartan Invitational against Kenyon College on Friday night, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21) to the Ladies at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.

Senior outside hitter Brianna Lemon led the Spartans with 15 kills in the match, while adding seven digs.  Senior middle hitter Haley Sims chipped in with a block solo and six block assists, and junior setter Jordyn Harberts paced the team with 17 assists.  Junior libero Anna Jaskoviak picked up a team-high nine digs in the match.

The Spartans started the match off strong, taking a 12-5 lead in the first set on a kill by junior middle hitter Katie Kaminski.  CWRU maintained its first set lead, and was ahead 18-12, before Kenyon rallied to take a 21-20 lead, en route to a 25-22 win.

In the second set, the Spartans trailed early, but would eventually take a 12-9 advantage on a kill by Lemon, but Kenyon again responded, evening the score at 13-13, and eventually claiming eight of the final 11 points in the set for a 25-20 win.  Although it never led in the final set, CWRU scored three-straight points to knot the score at 18-18, before the Ladies ultimately pulled away to claim the set 25-21, and lock up the sweep.

The Spartans, who dropped to 1-0 with the loss, hit .219 in the match, while Kenyon, which improved to 1-0, finished with a .291 hitting percentage.

The Spartans will look to bounce back on Saturday, when the team continues play at the Spartan Invitational against Denison University at 10:00 a.m. and Bethany College at 2:00 p.m.
