The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team will open its 2019 campaign as the host of the 2019 Spartans Invitational this weekend. The Spartans play Kenyon College on Friday, August 30th at 5:30 PM. CWRU then plays two matches on Saturday, August 31st. The first match is against Denison University at 10:00 AM and the second is against Bethany College (W.V.) at 2:00 PM.

The Spartans will open their 2019 season on Friday, following an 18-14 finish to the 2018 campaign. CWRU is slated to return 17 players from last year's team, including all six from the starting rotation.
The Spartans are under the leadership of Head coach Karen Farrell who is starting her 18th season with the team. She has notched a career-record of 345-242 for a .588 winning percentage, while helping to lead the team to its first NCAA Championship Tournament win in program history in 2015. Farrell is assisted by Nelson Wittenmyer, Jeff Harrah, Kim Waters, Dani Witri and Fabiola Torres.
After a 16-12 record last season, Kenyon will be opening its 2019 campaign against the Spartans on Friday at 5:30 PM. The Ladies are led by second-year head coach Kendra Mosher. She is assisted by Leanne Schaefer.
CWRU and Kenyon last met during the 2016 season at the Capital Tournament, with the Spartans defeating the Ladies 3-0.
Denison Big Red
Denison finished the 2018 season with an 11-15 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in conference play. The Big Red are coached by Carter Cassell, who is starting his third-year with team. He is assisted by Rosanna Sguerra and Lindsay Brewer.
CWRU and Denison last met during the 2016 season at a tri-meet with the College of Wooster. The Spartans defeated the Big Red in straight sets.
Bethany will enter the 2019 season after closing out the 2018 season with a 22-10 record, including a 12-3 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Bison are led by 13th-year head coach Courtney Kline. She is assisted by Sumayyah Muhammad, Keili Terry and Tom Kurtz.
This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2016 when the Spartans defeated Bethany 3-2.
The Spartans have won six of their last seven season-opening matches, dating back to the 2012 season…Last season, CWRU defeated Defiance 3-1 in their season-opener in Ada, Ohio at the Ohio Northern Tournament…Senior Karley King posted a team-best 12 kills, while senior Faith Ellis led in assists with 19 and junior Anna Jaskoviak tallied a team-high 18 digs...King was first on the team with 362 kills and Ellis finished first on the team with 646 assists, while Jaskoviak led the squad with 538 digs…The Spartans averaged 12.45 kills-per set, 11.65 assists-per set and 2.04 blocks-per set last season.
