The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team beat Brandeis University 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-8) in the final match of the 2018 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 hosted by Brandeis in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The Spartans (12-8, 1-2 UAA) conclude a tough, opening weekend of conference action. The Judges dropped to 7-9 overall, and 0-3 in the UAA.
Offensively, junior outside hitter Karley King led the Spartan attack with a season-high 20 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Katie Kaminski added 10. Junior setter Faith Ellis recorded a game-high 31 assists.
Brandeis was led by Shea Decker-Jacoby with nine kills and Marissa Borgert with 20 assists.
After the score was tied 17-17 in the first set, the Spartans went on an 8-4 run to close out the set. Kaminski recorded a kill to secure the Spartans victory at 25-21.
The second set belonged to Brandeis, who went on a 14-5 run to close out the set to secure the 25-20 win.
CWRU came out firing in the third set and jumped out to a 14-9 lead to begin the set. They closed out the set with a 9-7 run, including three kills from freshman outside hitter Lauren Carmon to earn the 25-16 victory.
The Spartans dominated in the fourth set as they carried the advantage in kills, 14-7, while hitting .351. CWRU finished the set with a 7-0 run capped off by a kill from King.
All eight UAA teams played a total of three matches this weekend. The squads will convene again in two weeks for four more matches at the UAA Round Robin #2 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 13-14. Seeds for the UAA Championships in Rochester, New York will be determined by the records from the two round robins.
Case Western Reserve will return to non-conference action this week, as they welcome Thiel College to Horsburgh Gymnasium for a mid-week match on Wednesday, October 3rd. Game time is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
