Spartan Volleyball Defeats Capital 3-0 in Bengal Challenge Opener

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team beat Capital University 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-18) on Friday night in Buffalo, New York at the Buffalo State Bengal Challenge.

The Spartans improved to 6-3 on the season and head into the second day of competition at the Bengal Challenge. Capital drops to 0-9 with the loss.

CWRU was led on the attack by junior outside hitter Karley King who tallied nine kills. Junior middle hitter Haley Sims contributed seven kills and junior outside hitter Brianna Lemon added five kills. Junior setter Faith Ellis rounded up 18 assists, while sophomore setter Jordyn Harberts registered 10.

In the back court for the Spartans, sophomore libero Anna Jaskoviak tallied a team-high 16 digs, Lemon and freshman outside hitter Lauren Carmon each contributed eight throughout the match.

The key moment in the match came early on after Capital took a 17-16 lead during the middle of the first set. Out of a timeout and after a Crusader kill, the Spartans rattled off three straight points to regain the lead at 19-18. That momentum carried on as they went on a 4-1 run that finished with a kill by sophomore middle blocker Katie Kaminski to give CWRU a 23-19 lead. The lead was enough as the Spartans finished the first set with a 25-20 victory. CWRU continued to dominate in the second and third sets as they won by margins of 13 and seven, respectively.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action at the Buffalo State Bengal Challenge in Buffalo, New York on Saturday. CWRU will open play against Geneva College at 1:00 p.m. and then conclude the tournament with a match at 3:00 p.m. against host Buffalo State.
