Volleyball Falls on the Road to Undefeated Mount Union

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team suffered a loss at the hands of undefeated Mount Union on Wednesday night in Alliance, Ohio, falling in three sets to the Purple Raiders, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20.

The loss put an end to a four-game winning streak for the Spartans, who dropped to 5-2 overall on the campaign, while Mount Union improved to 9-0 for the season.

The Spartans trailed by just a point in the first set, 8-7, before Mount Union scored 12 of the next 15 points to claim a commanding 20-10 lead over the Spartans, en route to the 25-16 victory.  CWRU fared better in the second set, hitting .250 during the frame, and taking a 15-12 lead at one point.  However, after a time out, the Purple Raiders, rallied for six of the next seven points to gain an 18-16 advantage.  The set remained close, but Mount Union ultimately claimed a three-point win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.  The Purple Raiders went on an early run in the third set, leading by as many as eight points.  A late Spartan rally helped cut down the advantage to four points, before Mount Union was able to close out the sweep.

Junior Haley Sims hit a team-best .278 in the match and tied for the team lead with seven kills.  Sophomore Anna Jaskoviak added a Spartan-best 17 digs, and junior Faith Ellis contributed 16 assists.  CWRU hit .128 as a team for the match.

Case Western Reserve will look to rebound this weekend at the Buffalo State Bengal Challenge, starting play at the tournament on Friday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. against Capital University.
