Spartans Earn Second Sweep of Season with Win over John Carroll

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team earned its second of the season on Friday night in Horsburgh Gymnasium, as the Spartans topped John Carroll University with scored of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-11 to open play at the CWRU Invitational.

With the win, the Spartan improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Blue Streaks dropped to 3-2 on the campaign.

Statistically, junior outside hitter Karley King posted a team-high 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Katie Kaminski added 10 to the team total. Junior setter Faith Ellis led the Spartans with 22 assists, while sophomore setter Jordyn Harberts contributed 15 to the team total.

Defensively, sophomore libero Anna Jaskoviak led the Spartans with 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Haley Sims added five total blocks to the defensive effort.

The key moment in the match came early on when John Carroll evened the score 18-18 in the first set. Following a service ace from JCU's Audrey Hardig, CWRU rattled off three straight points to take a 21-18 lead. That momentum carried on as they went a 4-1 run that finished with a kills from junior outside hitter Brianna Lemon to give CWRU the 25-18 lead. The Spartans continued that momentum in the second and third sets as they never trailed in either of them.

The Blue Streaks were led by Cassi Calamunci with nine kills and three digs.                                

The Spartans will wrap-up play at the CWRU Invitational on Saturday, when the squad plays host to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College at 10:00 a.m. and Defiance College at 2:00 p.m.
