On the first day of the Ohio Northern Tournament in Ada, Ohio, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split, with a win over Defiance College and a loss to Thomas More College.
The Spartans begin the 2018 season with a 1-1 record and head into the second day of the Ohio Northern Tournament. Defiance dropped to 0-1 on the season, while Thomas More improved to 2-0 on the campaign.
Against the Yellow Jackets, CWRU defeated Defiance by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 31-29 and 25-19.
Statistically, junior outside hitter Karley King posted a team-best 12 kills and also added six digs and five assists. Junior setter Faith Ellis led in assists with 19, while sophomore libero Anna Jaskoviak led the defensive rally with 18 digs. Sophomore Katie Kaminski contributed six kills and a team-high four block assists.
In the second match of the day, CWRU fell by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-18.
King led the Spartan attack again as she recorded 13 kills and Kaminski added seven to the attack. Ellis rounded up a season-high 18 assists. In the back court for the Spartans, senior defensive specialist Karina Bondelid tallied nine digs, while King and junior outside hitter Brianna Lemon each added eight to the stats.
The Spartans will be back in action at the ONU Tournament in Ada, Ohio on Saturday. CWRU will open play against host and 19th-ranked Ohio Northern University at 12:30 p.m. and then conclude the tournament with a match at 2:30 p.m. against Bluffton University.
