The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team beat New York University 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 15-25 and 25-22) in the final match of the 2017 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 hosted by Case Western Reserve.
The Spartans (13-7, 2-1 UAA) conclude a tough, opening weekend of conference action. The Violets dropped to 3-15 overall, and 0-3 in the UAA.
Offensively, sophomore middle hitter Haley Sims led the Spartan attack with 13 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Brianna Lemon added 10. Sophomore setter Faith Ellis recorded a game-high 38 assists.
On defense, junior libero Karina Bondelid totaled a team-high 17 digs, while Lemon contributed 15.
NYU was led by Rayne Ellis with 13 kills and Zel Fortson with 18 assists.
After the score was tied at 10-10 in the first, the Spartans went on a 15-6 run to close out the set. Sophomore outsider Karley King recorded two kills secure the Spartans victory at 25-16.
CWRU came out firing in the second set, gathering a 12-5 lead after a service ace from freshman outside hitter Anna Jaskoviak. The Spartans carried the advantage in kills, 12-8, as freshman outside hitter Jana Giaquinto finished the set with a service ace for the 25-13 win.
The third set belonged to NYU, who went on an 11-4 run to start the set and closed it out with 14-11 run to secure the 25-15 win.
CWRU rallied in the fourth by going on an 11-8 run to clinch the match.
All eight UAA teams played a total of three matches this weekend. The squads will convene again in two weeks for four more matches at the UAA Round Robin #2 in Chicago, Illinois on October 14-15. Seeds for the UAA Championships in Atlanta, Georgia will be determined by the records from the two round robins.
