CWRU Volleyball to Start Season at ONU Tournament

The Case Western Reserve University women's volleyball team will open its 2017 campaign with a four-game tournament at the 39th-Annual Ohio Northern Tournament in Ada, Ohio. The Spartans play host Ohio Northern University on Friday, September 1st at 2:00 PM, then take on Thomas More College at 4:00 PM. CWRU will then play two more matches on Saturday, September 2nd. The first match is against Ohio Wesleyan University at 10:30 AM and the second is against Defiance College at 12:30 PM.

CWRU Spartans

The Spartans will open their 2017 season on Friday, following a 21-10 finish to the 2016 campaign. CWRU is slated to return 11 players from last year's team, including four from the starting rotation.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Karen Farrell who is starting her 16th season with the team. She has notched a career record of 308-216 for a .588 winning percentage, while helping to lead the team to its first NCAA Championship Tournament win in program history in 2016. Farrell is assisted by Nelson Wittenmyer, Jeff Harrah, Katie Best and Dani Witri.

Ohio Northern Polar Bears

Ohio Northern finished the 2016 season with a 27-4 record, including a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play. The Polar Bears are coached by Kate Witte, who is starting her 27th season with the team. She is assisted by Brian Hofman and Katie Kuhn.

This is the first meeting between the two schools in the past 10 seasons.

Thomas More Saints

After a 21-10 record last season, Thomas More will be opening its 2017 campaign against CWRU on Friday at 4:00 PM. The Saints are led by 11th-year head coach John Spinney. He is assisted by Hannah Quinlan, Katie Sullivan and Dan Wanstrath. Thomas More returns 11 letter winners in 2017.

This is the first meeting between the two schools in the past 10 seasons.

Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops

Ohio Wesleyan will enter the 2017 season after closing out the 2016 season with a third-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Battling Bishops finished the 2016 year with a 19-13 record, including 5-3 mark in the conference. Ohio Wesleyan is coached by Kirsta Cobb, who is starting her fourth year with the team. She is assisted by Rob Samp, Don Burroughs and Jamie Douce.

This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2009 when the Spartans defeated the Battling Bishops 3-0.

Defiance Yellow Jackets

After a 10-15 record last season, Defiance will be opening its 2017 campaign against Carnegie Mellon University on Friday at 4:00 PM. The Yellow Jackets are led by sixth-year head coach Brie Brenner. She is assisted by Alicia Kalik.

This is the second-straight year that the two teams have met. In last year's meeting, the Spartans defeated Defiance 3-1.

The Spartans have won their last five season-opening matches, dating back to the 2012 season…Last season, CWRU defeated Capital 3-1 in their season-opener in Bexley, Ohio…Brianna Lemon recorded 12 kills and Karina Bondelid collected 19 digs…Lemon was first on the team last season with 400 kills and Bondelid finished first on the team with 476 digs…The Spartans averaged 11.76 kills-per set, 10.97 assists-per set and 1.74 blocks-per set last season.
